Yes the top piece....
Then, two weeks later, going across Wy. it started doing it again...
Took the visor off and the noise was still there...
I siliconed all the seams on the side cowl panels and that stopped it until I got out of that truck...
I'm convinced there are multiple area's that cause the noise depending on how exactly the wind crosses the front of the truck...
And your right,it will drive you nuts....
Currently in a '06 WS day cab and have never had the noise...

Wind was blowing like crazy here again yesterday, but I finally got it figured out. It's the windshield.
When I taped it off last time I Only put tape from the glass to the rubber strip. This time I taped across the strip, and the noise stopped. And it's only on the right side.vikingswen and IH Truck Guy Thank this. -
That's why I had that suspicion. When dealer did my windshield I had to go back and get them to re-seal the rubber. And my noise stopped.
That rubber surround seems to get really loose and sloppy after they touch it....or it's just my dealers workmanship? -
Great detective work. I had to replace my radiator fan since it started cracking in every blade. On the close up you can see spider cracks in the blades. Luckily Freightliner Northwest had two in stock and my parts guy gave me a good deal. $90.98. I checked the shroud and there is no contact from the fan.
-
Now looking at the pictures on the second picture it actually looks like there is a mark that could have been where the fan hit the shroud. There is a one inch gap and the radiator is sitting on frame. I guess I need to check engine mounts and see if the engine could lift the fan up that high.
-
I'll have to check my fan blades. My 2005 Paystar had a recall for that way back then.
And when this 4900 was new and still at the dealer a Western Star rep was in for a visit, looked at my truck and said...wow that has the wrong engine and rad mounts and they had to change them.
Not sure if I ever had a service bulletin about the fan. I don't recall them touching that.
So wonder if you have an issue with them Vikingswen? -
Couple weeks ago I had the rubber isolators that hold the ac condenser to the air to air fall out. Got the pleasure of putting a new air to air in mine. Pisses me off, truck has 175k on it. Got a couple spare isolators now and will keep my eye on them.
vikingswen Thanks this. -
The rubber on mine doesn't fit real tight against the windshield or the a-pillar. And the passenger glass has not been replaced.
-
I am just glad I saw that fan when I fueled two miles from the house. I could see that fan throwing the blades right through the new custom radiator I had built.Oscar the KW Thanks this.

We sure are a dedicated bunch eh? LOL. I still have to laugh as I keep thinking about those Western Star factory videos on their site when the guy keeps saying "does it cost more.......yes." LOL
Anyway, glad you caught that fan Vikingswen.
And that you caught those rubbers Oscar. I never even think of looking for stuff like that. We really shouldn't have to....should we?
Oscar, my windshield rubber fit real nice and tight, until my dealer touched it. Guess I got lucky with that part of the build, LOL.Oscar the KW and vikingswen Thank this.
