I have been interested in becoming a trucker for a while. I like the independence and not being confined to a corporate desk job or dealing with corporate politics: however, not sure what NAFTA will do to the industry. There is speculation that NAFTA and superhighway from Mexico to Canada will prompt companies to hire less expensive drivers from Mexico. In addition, can someone tell me, if at age 54, becoming a trucker is cool?
Looking forward to this new career.

    All tips welcome.:biggrin_25519:

Don't worry about the Mexican truckers, their numbers will be such a small % as to be negligible...I'm 46 and find this a good gig, much will depend on your needs and health...

give it a go for at least a year and if you dont like it you can always find something else, this way you wont regret not trying being a trucker. it may end up being the best job you ever have.

I'm 49 and still love to drive. But it's all I know. I'm also Canadian and no we don't steal jobs from the south. We load in Canada, head south, unload, pickup and head north. You Americans can do the same. But for what ever reason most that I talk to don't want to run into Canada. I just don't understand that. To me both country"s are the same. Get your passport and give it a try.

I find that if I can run Canada and the US I will always have a job and I'm in demand. To be honest I don't see any difference between the 2 except the border. The rest is the same to me.

I think we could all save a lot of money if we got rid of the border between Canada and the US. We are as one anyway.

Hi and to all who have posted:
Thank you for all your comments and helpful replies. So far, it sounds like this could be a cool gig. By the way, I love Canada, especially Montreal and Vancouver. If I have a chance to long haul my way up there, I will do it: if I could move there, even better'but first, I need to train for my CDL.

Can anyone share what major difficulties (distance, scheduling, time away from family, etc.) can be expected as a trucker, especially for a newbie? I have a neighbor who has been trucking for over 15 years and he was kind to share some of his experiences.

    Thanks

My good man I have been doing this for 5 years I love it and Im leaving in two weeks because I just can not keep working 60 hours a week for the very little bit of money I am paid I will miss it but I have given it 5 years and in my opinion the trucking industry is ruined Im not smart enough to list the reasons this happen, In my opinion its a waste of time.

How little is "very little bit of money"? I was just talking to a buddy of mine who loads and unloads wherever there are oil rigs in Canada(mostly Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Vancouver). He says after paying off the guys' cut he works for which is 25% and also his diesel usage, he makes around $130/hour. Could he be ############?

I got some ocean front property in Arizona.
From my front porch you can see the sea.
