So talking with a buddy and going over scenarios.....

Is it more profitable let’s say your in the Midwest where hopper bottom has loads by the abundance........

Running a day cab ( meaning can haul about 1-2 more tons Pay load ) with a hopper bottom and just run let’s say 100/300 mile trips let’s SaY1-2 a day

Or run over the road with a sleeper and haul long haul loads but 1-2 tons less due to weight of sleeper ??

Experience grain haulers and Ag haulers / farmers please respond and try to if possible give a reason why and your thoughts on it !!

    Thanks

The highest rate I’ve received was $75 per ton on a 550 mile (all day) run.
So that would be say $150, but then you would still have to get back, so a day cab is out in that case.
Shorter runs $14 per ton, so $28 more. Can do three to five per day. So we’ll say $75 to $125 more per day. And home every night.
But that’s all theory. It’s the line ups that wreck your plans.
Some days I plan on five loads, but can not get two in due to lines at the terminals.

    iamfargo Thanks this.

I got you so what you saying it’s better to go with a sleeper because those extra two tons won’t be worth if you get stuck out there on the road 300 miles away ? But that 14 a ton how long were those trips ?

Depends where you're at, I know for South Dakota you're going to have to gross around 100k to make any money, at least for loads I've seen. I'm assuming the guys running trains and 8 axle setups are getting solid year round contracts for a lot better than you can find on the board, only way it pencils out in my math.

If you're gonna run grain you're gonna want a place to rest while you wait.

There isn’t a 2-4K weight difference in a sleeper truck vs a day cab as long as the rest of the truck is the same. At the very least I would want a 36” bunk just in case things went south and you didn’t make it home.
