Stupidest thing I ever seen done first....
1. Its 1992-Im Pulling a Van at the Time. I Was Delivering to Farmer Jacks's/A&P In Detroit...I'm in The Dock patiently waiting for them to get started....As I Gaze out the Front Windshield, Im Watching Vehicles Come in the Gate While Others Leave..... Well A Small Box Truck (Probably 16') Was attempting to Leave, He Slammed on the Brakes as he was about to go out the gate...... When He did that, His Roll-up rear door Shot up the Track so Fast it Fell off the Track on top of the Boxes that were in there, I Began Laughing uncontrollably, Obviouisly He became Nervous,Threw it in Reverse and Ran into the Fence Near the Car Parking.....He Got out Scratching his Head, He Heard Me Laughing So Loud..That He ran up to my truck and said "What so Funny?" In Broken English....
I Said "What you just did is Hilarious"... He actually Worked for Farmer Jack's and proceeded to say "You be here all day" Which,Of Course I was anyway.
Now,The dumbest thing I ever did............
My First week in Trucking 1990ish.....I Had a drop yard in Markham,Il we used to Drop Emties and Loadeds..Small Yard for about 20 trailers, It was a Non-paved Lot,Dirt and Small Stone only, Well I Dropped a trailer there on a Friday Loaded with 44k of Cardboard Bales,It Rained- When I Returned Sunday evening to Hook up to that trailer- It was Down At Least a Foot...Could Not Get 5th Wheel under no Matter What- cranked Dollies down Which was hell, Still no Dice
Did I Call anyone? (Boss,Wrecker,Mechanic) Nope, I proceeded to Fix this Problem Myself at 21 years old and No Experience, I Pulled up 10 Feet,Threw it in Reverse to Get some Speed, And was Convinced that the 5th wheel plate will ":Force" its way under the trailer- Nope, It Collapsed The Legs- All I Heard was a Huge "Thump" Looked out my Mirror,And Saw a Trailer Nose Sitting in Mud.
Now I start Gewtting Nervous,Nobodys around.all Alone,Pitch Black out and a 7,000 pound Forklift in my Sight Sitting Across the Yard, I Hop on that Forklift,Start it up (Yes It had the Key) And Was Convinced the Forklift Will Pickup the Nose of the Trailer 4 feet so I could at least get Hooked, Yep,You Guessed it,The Only thing that went up in the air was the Rear of the Forklift......
Went Home scared and nervous- Bob Called my House at 8am(Owner) Yelling and Screaming, I Explained the Whole Thing- Cost me $2250 For Legs and a Wrecker with Slings.TruckChicken, tlalokay, Grubby and 10 others Thank this. -
iv had to do that a few times on trailers with pin type landing gear that was dropped too low or sunk.tlalokay, misterG, QuietStorm and 2 others Thank this. -
The other dumb thing I do everyday, i get back in the seat for more. Then again I love what I do , wouldn't trade the job for another.
misterG, kemosabi49, KillingTime and 3 others Thank this. -
Dumbest thing I've ever done? There's a lot to choose from. My favorite is hauling a load of logs from Dunsmuir to Redding with only one wrapper on. I was tired and I was in a hurry and I completely spaced it. The load was piled above the stakes, too.
Gives me chills just thinking about it.Lepton1, Dave_in_AZ, IluvCATS and 1 other person Thank this. -
Grubby, wore out, Dave_in_AZ and 1 other person Thank this.
