I can clear some of this up since I work for Marten and the accident is being discussed at every Marten terminal now. The driver was on his INAUGURAL RUN for the company(Company gave him an older truck,an International ProStar). He was fully loaded (80,000 pounds max) with 44,000 pounds of cole slaw when he wrecked but that's not even the worst news.
In addition to the fact that he was pulling one of the brand spanking new Intermodal trailers(company probably hadn't even made its first payment on it yet)when he wrecked,he wrecked in the middle of a NATIONAL PARK (which is FEDERAL GROUND), which means Marten will have to pay Uncle Sam for EVERY TREE CUT OR DAMAGED trying to extricate the truck from where it crashed. Basically this bonehead's job was over before it even began. I've driven that stretch of I-40 before, both east and west and it is to be respected. The second you don't respect it you end up like that dumb***. The last time I drove thru that area North Carolina Highway Patrol was PO'd to no end because someone hit and killed a black bear and didn't report it. That should tell you everything you need to know about running I-40 thru that neck of the woods.
At the end of the day I can guarantee you this'll be more than a $40,000 issue. The trailer alone cost around $36,000 at the most. If you factor in the tractor, the five wreckers( which get paid JUST TO SHOW UP),the cargo(which was a total loss) the labor involved getting the truck out,and inevitably the fines going to be issued by North Carolina DOT and the Feds (for destruction of government property-namely the national park grounds)this easily will be upwards to close to $250,000 by the time the dust settles. And of course, in addition to the driver, some other people might get fired, from his recruiter on down.Last edited: Jul 7, 2016

That wasn't a very good choice for his inaugural run. In hindsight, he should have been dispatched an easy peasy flatlander run.
I would imagine Black Mountain is no big deal for many drivers.
Every time I went down it, I didn't have an engine brake. I didn't like it one dam bit. Lol
It's not like being in Colorado or anything, but it wasn't any fun either.
That mountain has so many flashing lights, that made it worse for me. Lol
I can't believe he jumped out. Usually another driver tells someone to do that. It is amazing he is walking around with no serious injuries. -
White Suphur Springs after Sandstone to Start things off. You follow the old Tidewater C&O Coal to Norfolk more or less along this highway. White Suplhur is not top be ####ed around with. Stop at the truckstop there int he old lodge construction and enjoy a meal and raise a drink to those whi did not mae it.
You are going to wind through, around a number of ridges. Abd yes there is a couple you will have to fight.
Have everything with you ready for battle And a good medical kit in case lifes depend on it. You will hit the 81 Lexington Turn north it's 81/64 at this point in the game.
Near Lexington is 60 and 460, either Richmond or St Petersburg via Appamotix. (General R E Lee'ss
I cannot recommend either one anymore because 20 plus years can turn a nice road into a stop light choked hell holemjd4277 and austinmike Thank this. -

That guy isn't the first jumper lol..in 85 a friend of mine lost it on that mountain also and he jumped out just before the 77 freightliner coe went off the mountain scattering potatoes all the way down ..
The only parts of the trailer that came back to North Dakota were the reefer and tandems.
Tracter came back in 3 pieces .Dave_in_AZ, mjd4277, Lepton1 and 2 others Thank this. -
