It's amazing that so many experienced drivers don't know the physics of how drum brakes fade! The heat is absorbed by the drum which expands the drum (I'll bet there's drivers who can't even point out the drum in a picture of brakes) making the distance between the shoes and inside of drum greater. You'll reach a point where the shoes reached their peak on the S-cam and can't provide enough pressure on the inside of the drum to create enough friction to slow the vehicle anymore. Then it's time to hit the ejector button.
Black Mountain rag is the soundtrack in my mind for this story!
They should have brought in some pulled pork BBQ, cornbread and greens to help empty out the slaw!
