Hi all:
I am currently giving some serious thought about a career change into the field of OTR driving. One of the issues that comes to mind is that of a driver's choice or preference of destination areas for their assigned loads. By that I mean, are there any companies out there, who by perhaps their sheer fleet size alone, are known to make any effort at all to accommodate a driver's preference of where geographically they'd typically like to drive on a regular basis?
In my case, I live about midway between Chicago and Milwaukee, but I am a born/raised Canadian citizen (moved to the US in Dec/2001). So, for me, I would love the opportunity to be asked to deliver loads anywhere in Canada on a regular basis. Would such a request be seen by an employer as unreasonable by a driver in my situation? If not, would there be any companies who would be more likely able to accommodate such a request over other companies?
Thanks in advance for whatever input anyone is able to share.
What about trips to Canada?

Heck no, Most companies would kill for a driver that can and actually wants to go into canada. Living where you do, I can imagine you would have no shortage of loads available to you.

Sounds encouraging. Are there any companies that come to mind that are known in the industry (particularly those based in my region) that have those types of runs frequently available? For example, it seems the biggest hiring companies in this area (at least those that advertise the most for people around here) are in no particular order: Schneider, Werner, Swift and Roehl. Are any of those good bets versus bad bets for my geographical preference?

I see lots of Schneider, Swift and Werner trucks on the road here in southern Ontario. Schneider has a large terminal at exit 299 of highway 401, about 40 miles west of Toronto. Since you are a Canadian citizen, you might also inquire to some of the Canadian carriers that run a lot of cross border. Arnold Brothers and Erb come to mind with operations in Winnipeg.

I know that here in the US, Schneider has a training program for newbie drivers, but do they also have one in Canada (Ontario in particular) for people to their their class A there? When I lived in Ontario I never heard of such a program with them, but that was 6 years ago, so maybe things have changed.

1Canuck - Southern Refrigerated might be interesting for you, this is their coverage - 48 states and Canada- Vancouver,BC, Calgary & Edmonton, AB, Quebec, Toronto, Montreal, New Foundland (NF?? wow)
Interstate Distributer Co is another that may have the runs you want.
I am looking for a co that makes regular runs to Saskatoon, so we can visit with my wife's family when up there. Someone suggested IDC may be a good choice for SK. -
Interesting, thanks for the tip. I'll definitely check them out further.

Schneider in Canada (well, here in Ontario at least) has a new driver recruitment program, and mandates in-cab training for the first few months (which means of course that you don't get paid as much as an experienced driver, but thats to be expected). I am coming up on graduation from MY training program (Tri County Truck Driver Training, in Cambridge, Ont) and Schneider is one of the companies that I will be applying to. Try googling their website, and click on the driver (or career) link. That will give you additional information.

You're closer to Winnipeg, so I'd maybe look at Bison, Yanke, Winnipeg Motor Express.

Swift and CFI both have a dedicated fleet that only goes into Canada. Swift is out of New Boston, Mi. and CFI is out of Taylor, Mi.... I am not sure if you have to live in the area.
PS. STAY AWAY FROM SWIFT.
