    LMAO
    :biggrin_25514:

to OP any vehicle w/ turbo needs time to cool at idle, this forces fresh/cool oil to the turbo bearings while it unwinds from a beating. Also know current diesel engines burn less than 1 gallon/hour at idle, and emmision tests show cleaner air at the exhaust than its breathing in.
But I doubt that is an answer your looking for.

I don't think there is much of a reason to leave your vehicle idling for not purpose.. If there is a purpose then I can see why but if not then I don't see why you would want to... In Toronto we have idle policy that allows you only 1min for every 1hr, unless certain circumstances are in effect like too hot/cold, transit or if your in the course of using the vehicle for work...

Here is a GOOD reason not to idle with keys left in the vehicle... A few years back a construction contractor left his snow plow truck idling while he ran into a coffee shop to get a coffee.. Well some mentally unstable guy stole the truck and wrecked havoc on the streets... He end up plowing down and killing a police officer with the plow.. The guy I believe got charged for leaving the keys in his truck idling.. This is a good reason to now leave a vehicle idling because it can get stolen (unless you have a remote to lock the car while it's idling)... I always shut my work truck off when I run in for a coffee because I don't want a City Transport truck being stolen and killing people.. Even if you don't get charged for leaving your keys in, you would still feel somewhat reasonable for the actions.. Even tho you weren't the one whole stole it, your actions to keep the key in allow for it to be a target to be stolen.

I leave my personal truck running for a bit to allow for turbo cool down which is a must if you want to prolong your turbo's life span.. Sometimes if I have by dog with me and I have to run into the store I will leave it to idle with the cool air on.. I have a remote so I lock my truck with the keys in it so that it is secure and I only do this when it's too got to leave the windows down for her... I'd rather get a ticket for idling, then killing my dog from heat exhaustion or having her taken away from me and charged with animal cruelty.

I got unloaded, turned off the reefer and parked at truck stop and thought finally some quietness. nope theres allways some truck that's gonna park next to me and idle all night even if its 55-60 degrees at night. I heard some truckers sleep better to the noise of the engine. well I have an idea record a cd with engine noise and play it in your truck player that way at least youre not gonna waiste a gallon of disel every hour

    Everyone has different comfort levels.

Some may want heat at 55-60 outside. They may also have pets in their trucks

I drive a day cab and if I'm in the truck, I'm idling. It gets hot and humid in florida.

The cooler weather is nice, it's about 50 right now. Even at this temp I idle with the windows down while I do paperwork because I don't want to shut the truck down then restart it only 5 minutes later. If I'm not in the truck, then it's off. That's mainly because of Homeland security and company security policy.

I never shut my truck off because the idling engine powers a PTO that could run any number of things.
If you are a tree hugger out fishing, your time could be much better served asking these same questions to all fast food hamburger joints as it has already been proven that these grills they employ make many times more pollution than the modern day diesel.

The comparison of "idle" restaurants who serve and prepare food for the masses, sometimes on demand versus an idling truck, not powering anything than a heater or air conditioner for one, maybe two people is weak at best.

There are three kinds of drivers:
    - those made of ice cream and idle to stay cold, lest they melt,
    - those that are flowers and idle to stay warm, to prevent from wilting from the cold temps,
    - and those who have to tolerate the other two and are told to suck it up, quit being so selfish, stop telling them how to drive/idle, and somehow blame it on the megas or the gubberment.

*Yes, there are those who do have legitimate reasons, other than for comfort, to idle such to run a PTO driven device, though I can't see a reason to run a PTO driven device whilst at a truckstop during a 10 hr break, but I am sure there is one; or a mechanical reason such as a broken starter (I had that problem once); or to power a CPAP machine; or who have pets in the truck when they are away from the truck.

So you are obviously a card carrying member of the "No Idle" police.
Pollution is just that,no matter the source.
Comparing truckers to ice cream and flowers is and even bigger stretch but but that is you and yours are obviously ok.

well your Canadian laws are rediculous. I can leave my keys in the ignition, doors unlocked, and windows open. That is NOT a crime, the person stealing the vehicle is ccommitting the crime. Just because keys are in the vehicle does not mean someone can take it

Oh, I don't carry any cards except my medical card, a debit card, and most importantly, my frequent PFJ fueler card, with 4395 points as of this morning.

But I do believe you are mistaken, I made no such comparison of drivers and ice cream and flowers. I said they ARE ice cream and flowers; big difference.

All kidding aside, I don't care if you idle. Idle to your heart's content; idle until your piston rings are worn down to nothing; idle belching blue, black, or white smoke, I don't care. I keep my thoughts to myself and besides, I doubt you would even care what I'd think. I'll stay there quiet while you idle, I'll stay there quiet while you piss and moan about "anti-idle" ordinances. I just don't have to like it.

I live by a Be A Good Neighbor philosophy. Too bad enough of us don't., it's the "always me first, too bad for you" society in which we live.

    Idle away.
