Hello crowd, Ive lurked for years but finally joined up. I was looking for a little enlightenment. I am 21 years old and have had my cdl for 3 years now, I went to a truck driver training school back in 08 when I was 18. I work for a local LTL company as a yard truck driver and have been doing that since I finished the truck driving school. I have a doubles and triples endorsement and a hazmat and tank endorsement on my cdl class A license. I have been promised by the terminal manager here that I was going to start driving soon, start training with a driver etc etc. I keep reminding them about it every so often and they keep putting it off and giving me the run around about waiting just a little longer. I have a good record in the yard and I am quick and good at what I do. I work from around 8pm, come in and hook the sets, then get the dock setup for the inbound shift, break sets and bring them up to the dock all night and the various other switches and usually my day ends when the last trailer is put up in the morning around 830 or 9. I am making good money but I am pretty burnt out on the yard and it looks like they are in no hurry to find a replacement for me so that I can begin my driver training. Im begining to wonder if Ill be stuck on this yard forever, and Ive already just about had all I can take. Im interested in going over the road, im single, no bills, no family of my own, and I still live with my parents. It seems no one will hire me because its been a while since I finished the school and yard truck driving doesnt seem to count. DoI need to find a refresher course to take somewhere? Or can I go somewhere like crst or cr england etc etc and start with the folks that have no cdl at all? Id hate to stoop to that level but im getting a little stir crazy over here and want to get out and do something a little different.

first of all, there may be no need for a driver at your company now. they may have a hiring freeze. now on the other hand if they hired someone recently, well then that guy must have MORE experience than you do, so do not be all pissed off at them either.

you say you're "burnt out" from the yard..?? do you think that daily driving will NOT burn you out..??

yes, you will NEED to go back to school if you want to go OTR...otherwise, check other local companies on your time off.

    best of luck to you.

The problem is your age. From what i hear most company's want you to be at least 23 to even consider putting you out on the road. I can tell you this though with having your CDL and having as much experience you have you wont have any trouble finding a job after gettin re-cirted.

Southeastern Freight Line. Apparently company loyalty doesnt mean anything like it did years ago, or they would have gone ahead and put me in the training program rather than hiring someone who they know nothing about. I come to work ontime everyday, work safely and efficiently. They just hired, and I mean week before last just hired 2 p & d drivers. They told 1 they wanted him to work the yard for a while so I could do my training and he quit the 1st day, and I havent heard anything since then 2 weeks ago. Im sure Id get burnt out from the road, but unless youve drivin around 1 small yard 60+ hours a week lets not make the assumption that its a pie job.
