I just idle. It’s a newer emissions truck. I could care less about the cost, if I did I would reevaluate the line of work and trailer I pull.
What are some APU alternative setups??? its getting hot!!!

5 min shut down.... anytime your not moving for 5 min the truck just turns itself off...
Temperature controlled idle..... using the trucks built-in outside Temperature sensor they will only idle below 28° for heat or above 78° for ac.. so.. again that's OUTSIDE TEMP... and yes that is a setting that one company I know uses.. think about it... 4° below freezing before you can idle and 78° outside equals 85°-95° inside the truck
Some companies will penalize you for going over a idle percentage... or reward you for being under
Most companies can see in real time your idle percentage.is
Some companies have built-in apu''s either diesel or battery powered.
That is one of the things you need to ask about when looking at companies... "what's you idle policy"
Most of the people on this thread are owner operators... idling at truck uses between $20-$25 a night in fuel (that we pay for). apu's or generator setup uses less... my setup (portable generator and portable ac) uses $6 a night... that's a saving of $14 a day, $98 a week, $420 a month, over $3,800 a year..
New apu's run about $14,000, used around $5,000. My setup (generator, ac, and extended warranty) was under $1,500 and it cost less per hour to run than a Diesel apu...
And using the extended warranty on the generator I can replace it with a new one every 18 months and buy a new ac every 2 years for what is saved me using it for 5 weeks. So I still save $3,500 a year by using itSiinman and FreezingHot32 Thank this. -

@flood thanks for taking the time for such a detailed response. I’ve been in construction management for about 25 years. Have always “thought” there might be another way to make a living and I do like driving. So jumped into a CDL Academy on the advice from others here to get my CDL before I start applying. It gets hot here in south texas. So thought that would be a valid question of a recruiter. I know, they tell you what you want to hear, but that’s why I’m on this forum. I appreciate any advice. Thanks again. Stay safe out there!
flood, FreezingHot32 and Siinman Thank this.
