Stay out of these cities, there is no reason why anyone should sit in Detroit. There was someone shot here and his truck burned, everyone jumped on this idea that if he had a gun, he would be alright but thats BS. He should never been parked where he was at night or even in the day light especially when there was places within 20 miles to park safely.
what are some measures I can take to stay safe in rough neighborhoods?

When in Chicago I just pony up the money and park at the Bolingbrook truckstop. If you're there and TruckDuo is in town, he's a great host. Have him take you to Portillos.
tucker and stryker5673 Thank this. -

Ive parked in a lot of bad areas that were fine, I'm not going to go walking around or anything. Then I've pulled into a fewplaces that I was just like, nope, I'm out. Funny thing is sometimes you just don't know what kind of area you are in. I used to pull tank and would fill mollasis (sp?) In this back woods area in la. I mean back woods, man. First time I went I was like, this can't be right... I'm lost... I'm in the frikin woods. So I stopped and got out of the truck and this dude came out of nowhere and ran up on me. I was like hey man I'm lost I think, I'm looking for a plant around here. He just stared at me and then other people started showing up. All super hillbilly. Just checking me out, a guy ended up saying, right down there and they left. I got to the plant and told the guy how wierd everyone was and he said don't ever stop out there again. Everyone of those shacks is cookin meth. Every single one. You would never know how dangerous the place is, by looks alone. One of those places where if you don't belong, you don't belong.

Always stayed outside of the city for the night, then went in and delivered.

Decades ago when I pulled van, and sat in a bad area, we would back up to a wall or dock drop the landing gear and pull the 5th wheel before going to sleep. If you had to get out, you could, and they couldn't break into the trailer.
BostonTanker and rank Thank this. -
Stryker.....
Never shut the truck down in a bad part of town. You will know after a while. Like the others have said.......park outta town at some TS or Rest area close enough to make things easy.
As far as self defense goes............. I dunno. Too many variables.stryker5673 Thanks this. -
stryker5673 and RetiredUSN Thank this.

Aways. ALWAYS stay armed. That is your right as an American citizen. Despite company policies which may not allow it, it's a risk. But it's your life we are talking about. It's your job or your safety. I won't go anywhere without my sidearm.

I have seen a driver that, several times, has shut down in Inglewood neighborhood of Chicago. One of the worst for gangs and shootings.
He was a bobtail only so he parked on the street next to the police station.
