The part I find amusing is this......
[49 CFR 397.5 mandatory in attendance time for hazardous materials may be included in break if no other duties performed]
Looks like you must take a break from your duties and responsibilities... unless...... you have a hazmat load.....in which case you must take a break while on duty and in attendance.....lol..... just so long as you weren't doing something else.... like working for instance....Working Class Patriot Thanks this. -
LOL!!! I was thinking that maybe it would be an abuse of the rule if you were to take two of them consecutively....lol.... (I can hear the DOT man clicking his pen and putting it to paper, "Now driver, it is a gross abuse of the 34hr rule to link it to another one and make it a 68hr break....that's going to cost you, I'm afraid"

YOU ALL have it all wrong - this was triggered by something no one ever thought of, tv reality shows.
See some US DOT bureaucrat was sitting at home on the weekend and caught a segment of Ice Road Truckers. As a bureaucrat, he got into a really big panic about how unsafe these guys are and if there were other shows to show him more evidence so he looked for them finding shipping wars that Tuesday.
Wednesday morning after tossing and turning all night worrying about the people on these shows not logging, not taking proper breaks and driving all kinds of hours besides being as dumb as a box of rocks he met with a couple researchers and asked for a report with an overview of the HOS and other issues, he sent out a memo to his subordinates and his boss with a copy of the report saying that the publics safety is at great risk and we must prevent this carnage and mass killing at any costs.
His boss' boss got wind of the memo, decided it is time to fix this HOS problem by limiting these "crazy truckers" and put together a committee to come up with a new HOS that will ensure the publics safety. It was decided to make this a multi-departmental committee choosing members from across a few departments in the government, like from the USDA (food safety division), the department of the interior, HUD, and because they didn't have the art concerned covered, they invited someone from the National Endowment of the Arts.
So they slaved and slaved over the needed changes for the HOS, travelled to talk to truckers in Mexico, Japan and in the Caribbean then had a big conference in Hawaii where they did some break out sessions for team building then they finalised the new HOS proposal which was open for comments if you had by change were at the Emilia Island on the weekend they had their wrap up session and post committee party.
So that's how we got the new HOS.scottied67, trees, airforcetoo and 2 others Thank this. -
Like the thought, but the rules in Alaska are intrastate and not affected by this. -
So people who vote have no pushing power? Lobbyists have no control either?
OOIDA, Teamsters and the likes are the sole reason why these HOS regs are in place. Otherwise the feds wouldn't give a crap. -
You mean Teamsters wasted $2 million in political contributions ?
