I've been doin alot of research lately and there are so many options that sound good at first but reviews tell a different story. I currently live in Fernandina FL and there is a huge demand for truck drivers. I would love to make this my new career but I am very skeptical about all the programs that garuntee this and that or claim they have the best everything. I am looking for a good company in my area, not the other side of the country. Would prefer to hear from people in my area who have been in some more local programs or courses that I would, more than likely, be entering. However any insight into companies once your an established driver would be beneficial as well.

Your gonna find most trucking schools teach you cdl skills test for anywhere from $2000 to $8000 they don't teach you to drive , they don't give you any experience. Your not a truck driver when you graduate which is usually as soon as you pass your skills test at dmv and recieve your cdl then your down the road motors, needing a trainer to make a truck drive out of you, cause at that point all you are is a school grad, and most can't back into a dock , let alone shift gears clean....personally i would say find a friend willing to teach you to drive and teach you to do the job... Then when your ready you have experience and some ability and knowledge....thats the was us old guys,, most of us anyhow, learned.

Really If I knew anyone who could teach me I would be more than willing, I just don't know anyone who would do that for me.

ok, my suggestion would be to pound the pavement and make some new friends , offer to wash and grease the truck and fix minor repairs like lights and such. tell em you wanna learn, you will be suprised. basically your looking at owner operators though.... but those are the guys willing to give ya their time , like someone did for them.....get out and about and look around or head to the part of town you see lots of trucks parked...leave a note on door or windshield wiper with your name and number and tell em you wanna trade work for education..... i don't know many drivers that will pass up greasing their truck if they have a eagar beaver that is willing and able to do it for them..... lol have em show you what to do , git er done and ride with them and have them teach you..... best go take your written cdl tests and endorsements so you have your learners permit and can drive with them if they will let ya behind the wheel.... you can start learning to drive moving the truck in a parking lot backing it up and such doing measured stops and straight line backing you are gonna have to do in dmv skills test anyway also measured right hand turns turning around a traffic cone without touching with trailer tires and no more than 2' away from the cone.... you need to be able to do that... have them explain the mechanics of a tranmission and the mechanics of shifting both floating and double clutching too..... teach ya how to load and secure a load and hook up a trailer and so on.... learn the job... look around you will find someone... One important thing to always remember son, never say " I can't" probably rule number 1 in trucking is I can do anything......

That is how most learned but times have changed. Now most will not find a job unless they attend "formal training". I've seen lots of guys come to school after training with a friend so they could get a job. Unless the guy is training you for a job with his company, you're better off going to school.

    Drive safe!
