Do not know if you have done any Heavy OD, but last time I did I was very much over $20.00 per hour. Paid for almost everything except taking a ####. Still looking for a company that will pay a guy for that.

I feel the cream of crop differers for many people IMHO a private carrier is where its at...I haul our product to our customers only..paid for everthing we do,pre/post trips, fueling ,safety breaks, load, deliveries, meal pay and layover pay also fair cpm pay...motel everyday...I think most private carriers are above average jobs wheather it be hazmat or not...I have a few pals in the ltl profession they are also well above average ...great cpm pay home everyday...

The problem is that experience takes time.
Nothing you can do about that.
What you can do is gain as much experience in the time as you can.
What I mean by that is learn as much as you can even if it means doing more than expected of you.
I know there are guys who claim 20 years experience when they actually have 1 year repeated 20 times.
To get the cream you often have to do the sheety jobs to gain the experience.
The sheety jobs often provide much more opportunity for learning.
e,g You learn much more tarping an uneven load in the wind than you do closing the doors of a van.
Driving an under-powered truck with out a jake brake in the mountains teaches much more than a 600hp auto on flat ground.

You have to pay your dues but it is a combination of time, ability , aptitude , attitude, exposure and effort that will determine your experience level.
There are drivers with 3 years that are far better than some with 20 + years.
IMO you can only count yourself experienced after 5 years with the correct attitude etc.
Anything less and you are still getting there.
As stated even with 20+ years some have learnt very little beyond pointing a truck the correct way.

Not every job is the ideal job for everyone. Spent 2.5 years as a city driver doing LTL and hated every minute of it.

I have not read that anywhere here but just because someone makes/made less than $20 per hour and think "they have it made" does not make them or their situation sad. If it works for them and they are in their "dream job" why is that sad. It might not be your cup of tea but different strokes for different folks.

Dont forget finding that cream of the crop job also requires being in the right place at the right time, luck, persistence and a hundred other variables.
