Another thing I notice...as I get older...I see the benifits of staying with one company...expecially if it's a local company...I'm seeing people younger than me, in management positions, simply cause they stuck around and rose up through the ranks...and now all they do is direct operations...

I wish I could of learned this lesson years ago...but it's not to late...
If my fate is trucking or transportation...I need to find a place and stick to it, while taking college courses on logistics, so that I can one day manage, instead of always being a grunt...

Find a place, stick to it, take college courses at night or on line, and move up...that way when you get older, your not still humping boxes...

So sorry I missed this question of yours posted so many months ago...I just simply did not notice it...cause you know me...(well maybe not you personally)...but I respond to everything, and or question addresed to me...

Not sure what your doing now...maybe you've given up on trucking, and have another type of job...but either way I'll answer this best I can incase it helps someone else...

Question: if you start out as a bagger or cashier or stocker or deli dept, at a Winn-Dixie grocery store, can you eventually work your way up, or lateral into the transportation or trucking sector, and will they pay for your training?

    http://www.winndixie.com/Careers/dist_log.asp

here's a link to the Winn-Dixie logistics site...

scroll to the bottom of the page...ok...[IMG]

You'll see 6 red highlighted 'apply' links...

The very bottom one says...'ALREADY A TEAM MEMBER APPLY CDL-DRIVERS'

Now I'm not certain...but I think what they're saying by 'Already a team member' is that if you already work in another depertment, and want to be a driver, they they will assist you in that...

I'm not certain...I'd have to call tomorrow to find out for certain...

    Also...yes...I even use to work for Winn-Dixie....(I'm a ghost...I've been everywhere...strange huh)

And when I'd go back into the break room, they would have posted on bulletan board tuition assistance for those who wanted to attend college...they would pay for it, but you had to get a degree in business, of course, and then work for them...
Which is not such a bad option...not at all...

large grocery chains like Winn Dixie usually offer tuition help or will even out right pay for your education, as long as you dedicate a small chunck of your future to them...

It never hurts to check into it on your own...
Anyways, hope that helped...and sorry for taking so long to respond...

I dont know why all these wannabes think the only way to get into trucking is to sign a CDL training contract with one of these mega carriers. Get a job at an LTL company, soda distributor, beer and liquor distributor, CVS/Walgreens distribution centers etc driving a forklift or whatever, and work your way up. Find out if they have any kind of driver training program. Most dont anymore, but some will still let you take their equipment out in the yard and grind some gears on your own time.

Do it enough and practice the pre trip and all that, and go get the license for a fraction of what a school would charge you. This is how it was done back in the day.

Alot of these jobs pay just as well or more than these training OTR companies will pay. And many of them will be local, home every night jobs.

But when I look at alot of these rookies on the road today, I realize they wouldnt last an hour at a Pepsi or Coke facility filling orders. You have to actually, you know, work.
