What are the laws regarding traveling with small children/family?

I'd like to take my wife and son OTR with me, and my boss is looking into it. (ie: he doesn't have a problem with it) But he was under the impression the kid has to be at least 12. But I know I've seen much younger children riding in trucks.

In fact I recall reading a post from a female trucker who had a child OTR and then had to take the kid in the truck with her when she left the hospital.

So is anyone aware of what the laws are re, minors in trucks?

    Thanks in advance.

Your boss needs to contact the insurance company as that is who decides what age someone can be on the truck and usually will charge for having passengers. As for if there's an actual law, I have no idea.

My company will allow passengers at 8, heard others at 12, my dad's company is at 14. All depends on insurance.

Well, understanding seat belt rules apply to ALL vehicles, trucks included. I guess the first thing you'd need to do is figure how everyone is going to be properly in a seat belt or other restraint device at all times while the vehicle is moving. But yes, you do need to have written authorization from the carrier for all unlicensed (CDL) (and non carrier employee) occupants of a CMV and expect to sign off on a Liability Release Form for all the individuals concerned.

As far as I know, three people in a simi-truck is illegal.

Technically more than 2 people, the number of seat belts on seats, could ride in a rig, provided that they were in the bunk with the restraints set up.

The bunk area is replaced with seats instead of the bed.

It all depends on the insurance policy. My policy at Great West covers all passengers any age. Back when I was leased to Landstar it used to be 12 years but I think the went to 17 a few years back. It all depends on the insurance policy.
