My company won't allow any non-CDL carrying passengers anywhere on the truck due to insurance
What are the laws regarding traveling with small children/family?

Being a single parent I raised my boys in truck and now my grandson, most of the other replies are right to an extent. I've been stopped for speeding and went thru bunches of DOT inspections with nothing ever said except the officer joking about my co-drivers, one NC trooper even gave them a plastic troopers badge. A lot of companies have rules against various types of passengers, I have my own authority now but didn't always, and yes most insurance companies won't allow it but my agent who has been in the trucking insurance for forty some years told me if you ever have a wreck they will have to pay for any injuries regardless of the stated clauses, but will drop you afterwards. For the ones that think three in a cab is illegal you surely haven't seen those Government trucks with the three US marshalls in the cab, one driving, one in jump seat, and one in the bunk, you will always see vans or suburbans with dark windows and huge antennas's in front and behind them.

Seat Belts are only required for actual seats. A person in the bunk area is not required to be belted when not sleeping. And yes i know there are Web's for people who are in the bunk sleeping. I have never heard of anyone using it.
Ever see people walking around in an RV going down the highway? If the cops started pulling over people for that, they would need more shoulder room on the highways. Talk about revenue generator. -

So generally it looks like it's up to my boss's ins carrier. Good to know. (and probably beyond his control if they say no. So no begging)
I did mock it up once already, the child seat fits in the shotgun seat just fine. As far as people (truck school students/laborers/spouses/co-drivers) riding in the bunk area unbelted, last I heard seatbelt laws only apply to front seat people of any age and only children in the back seat. (and child seats & boosters for the very small) Last I heard, adults are not required to wear seatbelts in the rear seats.
Oddly enough public busses (city and interstate) do not even offer seatbelts! And I'm pretty sure you can take and infant/toddler on a Greyhound. Go figure.
