Guess it just comes down to personal preference.

Yep. For a young driver, just starting out, I recommend the paper, though. Much less expense, for somone starting out with probably limited funds.

a briefcase. To carry all your paperwork. Get a nice aluminum one.

A Rand McNally motor carrier atlas. I like the unlaminated one.

A ruler for doing your logbook

Zebra 301 pen. Makes for a nice logbook

A calculator. Nothing fancy. You make errors at the end of a 14 hour day.

    Post it notes.

I use a dry erase marker to write my route I am taking on the windshield. As you complete it, you wipe it off.

    Windex, papertowels.

Get a fuel filter and appropriate filter wrench from the shop you work for. You never know when you might need one. Have them show you how to change it too if you don't know how.

    Coveralls

    work boots

Enough tools to at least change lightbulbs.

    Spare bulbs, fuses and headlights.

winter / cold weather / wet weather gear.

extra blankets / sleeping bag / sheets.

I carry a 2 gallon igloo cooler for water. Refill as needed. Most restaurants will top it off for you for free too.

Get yourself a packet of blank generic Bill of Lading.
I have needed them twice now in the last 3 months. One because they didn't have anything at the shipper and this week, for the life of me, we have no clue where the BOL disappeared to as they were marking stuff off on the packing list. I had a blank one, filled it out and told the broker what was happening and down the road we went. Never just fill these out, always work with the broker/dispatcher if you are having to because of lost, misplaced or destroyed bills. (water damage comes to mind)

throw rug for the floor of the truck. one you can toss in the washer if you wanted to. Keeps the feet warm in the morning too when you step out of the bunk.

Extra food / energy bars etc. Especially with winter coming.

Canned heat like they use for buffet tables. Make for good emergency heat too. Last up to 12 hours.

I hope this guy is talking about after he gets out of his trainers truck, because there will be limited room and you will be sleeping with most of your stuff, and those things can become projectiles on hard stops and accidents. So don't show up to training with a bunch of stuff. Most won't pay for extra baggage, and just because you are going to orientation. Doesn't mean you got the job. Pack light and worry about the truck when you are assigned one.
