I recently passed my CDL exam, and am now looking at renting a truck and trailer to do my testing in for a Class A. Will I have problems being hired because I didn't go to one of the schools?

more than likely... yes you will. There is a lot more to driving than just getting a CDL. Being with a trainer really does help... having said that, there may be someone out there that will hire you. If they do, you may regret it and end up losing your license eventually because anybody that hires somebody with your possible background isn't anybody I would want to work for... Good luck either way.

I got my cdl-on my own bought my own truck and started. You will have to buy your own truck and trailer to get started most likely but this industry is tough to get into to say the least

try going with a company that is NOT one of the mega carriers and hopefully you can land a decent driving gig while perhaps driving more of a real truck as well.
best of luck to you truck driver-

So what about the companies that hire new drivers? Don't they put those drivers with trainers for the company?

The training companies that hire new drivers want you to have graduated from a CDL school and usually want so many hours of instruction.

Like fatboy said, most companies require training from an accredited school.

It doesn't mean it can't be done. You might land a local job or get a job out of the newspaper or Craigslist with an owner operator.

Once you land a job it might not be the best. Make sure you stay with it and get 6 months or 1 year in and then more doors will open.

as a trainee over the road,a trainers job is to refine the skills you should've learned in trucking school, and to teach you paperwork, dispatch, and dealing with customers.not too completly train you.no trainers going to want to take that on.now having said that,my 2 recomendations are prime, and watkins and shepperd.

So they require to spend thousands of dollars to go to a school for your CDL, when you can do it on your own for probably 600 bucks..
