Averitt trainer drive for a day then in the passenger seat the next 6 weeks actually training you.
What are the responsibilities of trainers if any?

New drivers should keep BUS FARE or PLANE FARE $ money while riding with a Trainer. You have some real egomaniacs who will put you out at a Truck stop if you question their authority. You should follow trainers instructions until you think they are giving bad advice or dangerous advice.

If you rear ended a car, who is liable...is your trainer liable?
I'm not trying to be a buster, but I' not goingt sugarcoat anything either. You say that you were confused as to what lane you should be in. Why? Havent you been operating a motor vehicle for over two decades? Isn't it the responsibility of a motor vehicle operator to read and understand ALL road signs?
Your trainer sucks. He's a slacker. He doesn't plan well, he doesn't communicate well. He lied to a cop. You being weak, didn't speak up. I would have spoken up just to watch the cop crawl in his arse. Spine, son...it's called a spine. Use it. It prevents people from walking on you. If you are tired, PULL OVER. Do you understand? There isn't anyone on the planet that can make you drive tired.
What should you do about your sucky trainer...request a new one? No. At best, that will set you back a few weeks. You need to finish training to get issued your own rig. The training is the absolute worst part in the whole industry. Get through it and it gets better.
And finally, you need to toughen up. It's quite a bit more difficult and stressful to drive a big rig than a 4wheeler. You will get use to it. Do your laundry when you are going to sit for 24 hours or more. You're in training. You need to always be ready to drive. You'd better thank your lucky stars that your trainer is a slacker. If he were a hard charger, you'd be in a coma. When it's time to sleep, you need to sleep. When it's time to drive, you need to be able to stay in the saddle and drive. That's the only way you're going to make any money.Last edited: Aug 18, 2015

The question is what is the responsibility of trainers when they are training new drivers? -
A trainer's ONLY responsibilities to the student are outlined in the company policy manual. In other words, there are none. Since YOU were behind the wheel, YOU have the legal responsibility to operate the equipment in a safe, legal manner.
I honestly wonder why carriers even bother with "training". It's just as much a scam as leasing. While I am not a fan of government interference in business, "training" needs to be regulated and audited by an outside agency. Too many of these carriers are putting the bottom line profits ahead of the safety of every person on the road through their BS training antics. A driver who has completed training should be able to operate a CMV safely in ALL conditions. And I see far too many new drivers who don't have a clue due to piss poor "training". -
You have the responsibility to read road signs. You being behind the wheel are liable for all tickets. A trainer is not responsible to teach you to read road signs, you should have already known how. Your being "overwhelmed" doesn't float.

Your trainer failed you that being said it's a really hard time you're in right now being new for 1 driving teams you can never get enough sleep or sleep good you just have to stick it out a m little longer and you will be the captain of your own ship . Never except the ticket you get you fight every ticket everytime they will reduce it to some bilullshit non moving violations and you can pay the fine Chp are thieving pigs just after revenue.

What trainer is that? Doesn't sound like you have one.

well I really do appreciate all of the helpful comments, I knew some people would be harder on me than others as there is a robust spectrum of opinions on this site. I still do think there should be a more standard code of ethics for trainers in these situations because I feel like I definitely got the short end of the stick I know people say your are behind the wheel so you have the responsibility and while this is true, it is also somewhat of an oversimplification in my opinion because we are taught as students that trainers have an authority due to their ostensible and knowledge whether this authority is implicit or explicit it is an authority there just like when a man sees a psychiatrist or a judge there is a power differential in the perception which causes us to add weight and respect for the person in a position of power. As such whenever there is a trainer in the seat beside me I have been there under the assumption that they are there to guide me and teach me what I need help with on the spot. People will say I need to read the road signs and that's fine too but its not like I was intentionally not reading signs or playing with an iPhone or looking at pretty girls. I had no distractions I was merely out of my league and tired and first time on a six lane highway in rush hour traffic tired and I think the best thing I could have done in that situation was to ask the help of my trainer and he let me down. now i come to find out my trainer has lived in this area of California for the past 20 years so he was very familiar with that highway and it wouldn't have been hard for him to simply take a moment and say "you should be in the next lane over" or "you should be in that lane over there". If that is not why trainers exist I don't know what is? So when the cop asked my trainer why he let me drive in that lane and my trainer fibbed that he was sleeping, i cannot shake the feeling of being thrown under the bus in a very egregious manner.
