Specifically, could you, legally, drop in a free-breathing DD16?

I'd love to have the power, low oil consumption, great jake brakes and fuel economy of a DD16, but without the alphabet soup attatched.

Or would you have to drop it in a pre-emissions truck?

Don't think thats possible. You need to put a pre-emissions engine in it. Don't think you can just strip down the DD16 and make it work. A well built Det. Cumm. or Cat should get you everything you need. I making plans on getting into a glider next year with a 12.7 in it, I think with the right add ons and a lift axle I should have a 10MPG truck.

I have a 12.7 now, but for hauling 90,000 gross in the Pacific Northwest, it's pushing the envelope. A free breathing DD16 would probably shave at least an hour and a half off the trip, plus save some fuel. I looked at a freight liner with a DD 16 that's used in a similar application (with the alphabet soup attatched) and the lifetime mpg is 7.1. He pulls hills at twice my speed, and I'm getting 6.32.

Have you thought about adding a power box or a bully dog to it? Maybe a big turbo too.

Just put a new manifold and turbo on. The turbo helped uphill, but hurt a little on the downhill, reducing the holdback from the jakes. Sometimes she runs like I have a half empty trailer, sometimes she's 25 mph on a pull. Hard to cover 632 miles in 11 hrs doing 25..,,,,,

The better jakes on the DD15 are pretty seductive when you have 90,000 lbs pushing you down Cabbage, and you see a guy 200 yards up the runaway ramp like last Thursday.......

Not wanting to sound rude (cause I'm not ), but why don't you go with that newer truck to get the dd16?

Remember, good, fast, and cheap. You only get to pick 2. Thems the rules

Friend of mine saw that dude. Lol

Anyways, the way I understand it, is the emissions are tied to the year of the motor. So legally you can't take all the stuff off a dd16. Just like a 2003 pre-emission ISX is legal, but a 2015 with all the stuff deleted and built back to a 2003 isn't. There's guys having good luck with the maxi loads running the Detroits out there.

    I recently spent a month in a 2012 Coronado SD with a 600hp 2050 trq DD16 in it.

It is a beast of a motor compared to the C15 I have in my personal truck.

As for all the emissions things,.. my carrier did some things to the engine that we are not allowed to discuss. All I can say is that the motor never regen'd or used any DEF. You can take that anyway you want.

Also,,.. the motor made a few more HP and Trq over the stock specs. The first time I pulled a load with it I though the front left axle was lifting into the air,. scared the jeevies out of me. Had to tender foot it to drive it right.

As for fuel mileage from a DD16? I dont see how it would ever get over 4 - 5 mpg doing heavy loads,.. 90k plus.

The one I was in was averaging 4.3 mpg pulling 120 - 165k gross.

3.90 gears and 18 spd on 24.5 rubber.

Will it pull a hill? At 120 - 140k gross I could easily pass the mega companies on virtually any hill. I upset a few Fed Ex guys as I would pass them climbing hills,.. then they would get upset because they had to pass me after, as I wasnt cruising more than 60 - 62 mph. Something about passing a 12 - 13' wide load scares people I guess. Not like I didnt give them plenty of room.

There were some series 60 14 litre non-egr engines. Some were rated as high as 575 hp/1850 lbs ft torque.
    I think they are rare.
Also, there are some C-16 Cats 600 and I think they may have had 2050 lbs ft. Non-egr, etc
    And the N-14. 525 hp 1850 torque.
Also , the ISX signature. 600 hp non-egr.
All these engines were available before the new emmisions rules. You could put one of these in a glider.

If you could get one it would be with all the emissions crap, then the first modification you will probably void the warranty or at best they'll charge you to put it back to stock before any warranty work will be done.
