In Canada? You do not have to run a daily log if you do not ever go beyond a 160km radius from your terminal. But you can be asked to produce proof of your hours over the past 14 days which the company will have to provide the scales via fax/email if requested.

You must however, complete a daily pre-trip inspection report and carry it with you.

Don't let the old man confuse you. If you stay local and you run a log (in the united states) you only need the past 7 days. 8 total including the present day.

Same thing, the company can be made to produce the records for the past 14 days.

Which is why many require even local drivers to run a daily log

Too much to get into on a thread but if you read and study the manual you should get the gist of it pretty easily. If reading that little DOT manual seems bothersome then I highly suggest buying a Motor Carrier Road Atlas. A nice one! Big laminated one, up to date! In the front before you get to the section with all the maps of the states there is a whole section of rules and regulations and all kinds of other pertinent information to trucking. It reads a lot simpler though in the atlas than in the DOT manual. You are going to need to purchase one anyway so might as well get ahead of the game and study up. Also once you buy the atlas you can start practicing your trip planning. Trip planning is going to be crucial to you making money out there!

    Good luck man....

If your log is REALLY jacked up, don't show it to him.

You might be placed Out of Service for 10 hours. But it beats the alternatives.
