Yes I did. I have parked in worse places. I parked there, got myself something to eat, set up my satellite dish, locked myself in the truck, and let my copilot watch over things. She has a keen eye and will bark until what she perceives as a threat leaves.
The Pilot and TA in Hammond LA, the notorious two Pilots on 78 Memphis mentioned about a 1000 times in this thread, the Pilot and TA in Roanoke, the TA in Milford CT, Pilot in Shartlesville PA. All dumps and/or tight/weird layouts. Whoever thought up L-shaped parking lots like the Pilot in Hammond, dead ending in front of the fuel pumps was a real brain surgeon. Favorite stop is Bosselman's in Big Springs, also the Grand Island locations, in NE. Shoemaker's [the new one] in Lincoln NE is pretty nice. Some others I can't seem to think of right now. For finding parking, I've been fond of the J in Lake Station In, the J on exit 2c in NJ off 295, the J in Lasalle Il. I may have a Denny's addiction...
I think you've got those wrong driver, Milford's CT is a Pilot, and Shartlesville is a Loves. (Though Pilot just bought an old indy up the road and converted it into a Fishhook) The T/A up on 84's a lot shadier and you have to pay for the privilege. PA has a lot of small indys floating around on secondary highways too. Yeah, I haven't gone in there but it's a pretty big spot. When I was OTR I spent the night at the Pilot up the road, got lucky and got one of the 3-5(?) spots there and took a 10. Since I could only buy fuel at Pilots (pre-merger) nobody told me about the J around the corner until I found it on a later trip though the area.
I didn't find it that bad. But I was there with snow and ice coating everything. And I don't have a frame of reference for what it may have looked like. The store looked fine and the restaurant was good. Probably the best wait service I've got in any truck stop restaurant.
