What are the worst cities to drive in?

Wow, someone who knows who Tommy Bolin is! You aren't from Iowa are you?

 

This one hasn't shown up yet, so I'll add Pittsburgh, PA. It's just so tight and narrow. I don't mind it in the least in a four-wheeler, but in a big truck, it's hair raising.

 

I'll 2nd that. Pittsburgh is just layed out weird with the 3 rivers snaking through it.

 

Nope, not from Iowa. However, I'm sort of in the know, about him and his brother Johnny. Was even at his(their parents... Sewer City, Ia as Johnny refers to it) house years ago shortly after their mother passed away.

Personally I am convinced the armpit of the USA is somewhere around Newark/Elizabeth NJ. Phillie is a challenge. Chicago is nasty if you have to go to the markets downtown. I so far have successfully avoided NYC except for one run into the Bronx fruit market... it sucked. Turn was so tight I cut an airline with my faring! (Hey, I was a newbie then.) Atlanta is also a nightmare. LA is ridiculous. Dallas is a joke... all that Texas room and they have to make the lots so small and tight?
Also dangerous is Detroit, particularly the warehouses down off Mack Street. Don't even THINK about sleeping there! You WILL have your load stolen and may loose your life as well.

 

No one mentioned Pittsburgh off/on ramps, why is that? Chicago 1) low bridge capitol of the world, 2) delivery route is on residential streets posted “NO VEHICLES OVER 5 TONS ALLOWED”, 3) snow white passes you on the shoulder, and where are the 7 dwarfs, right behind.

 

I lived in Jersey most of my life and drove a straight truck for 15 years. I stayed with the same company mainly because we didn't run NYC/Long Island. Now I live in the Austin area and this traffic sucks too. DFW or Houston middle of the night is the only time to drive through.

 

Hunts2much: If it's a regular LTL in Chicago, don't worry; you'll know the drill. If it's constantly changing, you've been scrood, but you'll learn to drive, no doubt.

About Atlanta: Metro is pretty spread out, so tight spots are mostly inside of the supercircle. Where NO ONE knows how to drive! As for rush hour here, it's the same game every day: Drivers coming in say "Uh, wass da holdup?" and we say "Five and a half million people going to work?" Then you slog along for up to an hour and a half.
If you hit us in the two hour window before lunch or mid afternoon, it will only take you 45-50 minutes if you take the west side.
The lie about going thru town with a rig is that they won't bother you if you mind your biz and go slow. Hundreds of drivers beg to differ. They do seem to pick certain times of the month to ticket you tho.

 

Has anyone ever heard of "Stop Light City" in Indiana? It's actually Kokomo, my home town. I've driven 48 states and have heard it mentioned more than a few times. It's not the worst, but is a pain. Thot I'd throw that in there.

I never liked truckin' thru Chicago. All of the major cities are the pits if you're doing it during rush hour. Atlanta and Dallas stand out in my mind. And of course, NYC.

Great views during rush hours though, eh?

 

Pittsburgh would seem difficult to me. Never been there in a truck. In a car their roads and tunnels seems messed up. Also, as mention before the 3 rivers makes it more tricky.
