my average rev was 3900-4k and I drove at 60 as opposed to wide open. So my fuel points kept my % up.
I guess you missed the point of my post.. it is beneficial for company drivers to watch their MPG. -
MPGs, specs, type of open deck work, operating area.
That's what we're after. -
2000 International 9400i, Cummins N14 500HP, 13sp pulling step deck. In the last 12K miles, I've averaged 7.5-ish mpg. On my current trip, I'm showing 7.64mpg over 500 miles. Before idling overnight, I was showing 9.7mpg on 410 miles.

Current QTR in the Star (motor still loosening up).
Couple runs out West, then mainly Midwest. 14' wide, 14'2' tall, average @85k lbs pulling a RGN.
4900EX Western Star, 515 S60, 13speed, 3.55's, 24lo pro's, run the speed limit everywhere (65-75mph) 5.2 so far for QTR 3
Last truck doing the same thing, Columbia, 450 Mercedes, 13speed, 3.42's, 22lo pro, 5.7 in QTR 2.
For .5mpg difference, I'll stick with the Star and have the extra power. Overtaking someone while loaded is no longer a major event like it used to be...

My Celect ECM mileage display actually shows LESS than what Danny reported from the actual gallons / odometer miles. So I'd think that the Celect calculation is reasonably accurate.
Make no mistake, it was very difficult to get that 9.7mpg on this trip. It took constant attention to keep the throttle position relative to the terrain in order to achieve optimum fuel economy. I can't see myself driving like that 100% of the time; it would wear me out.
I found that allowing speed to bleed off on upgrades (apply only enough torque to maintain the current fuel economy calculation while downshifting to keep speed reduction to a minimum) and only accelerating on downgrades showed the most benefit to fuel economy.MJ1657 Thanks this. -
That would drive me nuts driving like that! I get in the 3-4MPG range but what I drive is nothing even close to being relevant to this thread anymore.
Prior to this job it was a 2005 Pete 379 short hood TMC truck. 13sp, 475 C-15, 3.55 rears 62MPH. More OD then not(11'11" wide 14'2" tall usually) on an RGN or step. 5.8-6.75 depending on winter or summer and what I was pulling for how far obviously. With standard flat and step freight ie lumber, shingles, sheet steel, I could get 6.5-7.5 no problem in the Midwest. Not bad for a brick in the wind! -
After looking thru all this I get the worst fuel economy out of anyone and I'm not heavy hauling!!!!
I did get 5.7 last week did a 24,000lb 4ft tarp load....
