Lower deck height so you can haul taller stuff.

Is it just the lower height? Or do they also offer stiffer sidewalls too? I can see the advantage in height being a MAJOR plus on some of the loads I see being hauled.
I only ask, because Ive never dabbled in that realm before.

17.5 has only one advantage, low. They have a long list of disadvantages, greatest being they like to blow if not babied.

You've just got to weigh your options. If you need to get a 10' 6" load legal on a step, about the only option is to be sitting on 17.5 rubber.

He wants to stay with Mercer. He was working for another O/O so he's already good to go. Doesn't have to do orientation, etc. He's been off work for three weeks now and needs to get to work as quickly as possible. But, not saying that something might change in the future. If you want to give me your email address we could talk privately about who you're working for, etc

Yes, I know the risks of running 17.5s. It is scary. But, he seems to be dead set on running that size. We should see the tractor/trailer fairly often and my husband if very big on maintenance. We take very good care of our equipment. So, hopefully it will work out okay.

    Logan76 Thanks this.

Oh ok, So he's just leaving one contractor for another.. What the other guy not keeping him busy or you give him a better deal. lol
Now has this driver run 17.5 tires before? is that what he was currently running with former employer, or is it one of those mom mom I really want this setup?
Has there been lds. he missed due to tall rubber?
Hiring a driver and running small tires can get pricy for you guys.
I don't know the driver and you either. I know you stated your hubby does try to keep up with the maintance, which I will give you kudos for that.
I have run small rubber on a 3 axle step deck.. Summer time and running over 60 mph. with any weight on the trl. I would blow out tires. center axle was the most common inside tires
Buddy of mine ran a lowboy with low pro tires. He kept up on the tire pressure and keeping the speed down. Still had issues
Best of luck in your choice

Don't ever let your driver make decisions for you of this kind. The only difference is height of the deck. You can permit a load that is tall. I would stick with 22.5 tires. Blew two tires when I hit an elk. Good thing I had one spare because the tire shop only had one and I was lucky they even had that.

If you're going to order a trailer consider container locks if you have a 40' bottom. They're a pricey upgrade but really speed things up when loading/unloading. I ordered them in my Reitnouer 8/40 and love them.
Nix on the 17.5's. in general use, as stated above their problems far outweigh the advantages. I've been with Mercer awhile and just don't see the need that often for a lo/pro step.
