Try straighttalk. If you just need basic phone service buy a test phone and one month card and see if it works good for you. That is what I did.

Is Sprint really that bad? They are good for me locally and when I travel to NJ they are good the whole way. I stream Pandora on 3G the whole way from NC to NJ with just drop out or two on the southern end of 301 in Virginia. Decent cell service the whole way.
I'm guessing out in the less densely populated areas it's worse? I have unlimited data so I'm curious if I am going to need to switch.... I have 4 phones on my plan. Sprint is by far the cheapest for unlimited family plans...

I have T-Mobile for my main phone and I have a Verizon phone for backup. The Verizon is an add a line on my mom and step dad's family plan and is just talk and text. I pay her the $10 a month it costs to add it. It's an old flip phone but works great. $10 a month to cover the occasionally spotty t mobile coverage is better than paying full price for my 4 lines at Verizon. My biggest gripe with T-Mobile is the data roaming cap when roaming domestically.

I have AT&T. Very few dead spots, on interstates. Only one that comes to mind is on I-86 in Utah. When you get onto US highways and State highways the coverage is a bit spottier, but have never been without for more than a few miles. Once is a while when you cross a state line, the call drops, but not all the time.

Thanks for your input everybody I was looking at going Verizon and getting iPads for me and my wife so I can skype with her and see my son while I'm out on top of phones so I know it will be expensive lol but I've never had any complaints with AT&T either I'll have plenty of time to check on it while I'm waiting to start my journey and all lol

If you go with Verizon and get a decent data package, you can get an app called "Tango" and it uses a fraction of the data that Skype does and does the same thing that Skype does... Just a thought.
