Well it's looking like I'm gonna get laid off sometime in the near future so now seems like as good a time as any to strike out as an independent. I've been working in the oil field but I long to get back to otr. I've got some good capial saved up and I'm not really worried about failing.

My current plan is to buy is to buy a decent older(99 or before) lease a flatbed and a reefer. The problem is I'm not really sure where I want to move to, as living in the desert is no longer profitable .

I've narrowed it down to these cities and I'm wondering which you all think best from a drivers perspective.

    • Grand rapids, Michigan
    • Lansing, Michigan
    • Clarksville, Tennessee
    • (Forgot about Memphis)
    • El paso, Texas
    • San Antonio, Texas
    • Cincinnati, Ohio
    • Columbus, Ohio
The research I've already done indicates that they'd all be decent in terms of freight and have a steady stream of customers for my other business endeavors (I'm planning on buying some appartment complexes.) I'm wondering where you all think would be ideal to start a small company that I hope to one day turn into a small fleet?

    Nope.

I am as close to memphis as I care to be. Its the number three logistics and trucking in the entire Nation.

McKesson in specifically. High value pharmacy loads out of there. Cardboard bales back. As sure as the sun rises tomorrow. Every day for as long you can stand it.

Memphis was supposed to be on my list but I forgot to add it. Low housing costs, a major University, a freight Mecca, and the fact that it's in Tennessee are all huge factors .

NOT Ohio...just saying. Freight IS decent, however... but NOT as far south as Cincy...IMHO.

There's a small fleet owner on this forum that's becoming very wealthy running his business from Phoenix.

    Yeah; Nashville is crisscrossed by I-40 / I-24 / I-65.
