I know that just because a company's program is intensive doesn't make it better - I'm just curious.
What companies have the most intensive training programs for their new drivers?

This maybe worthless as last I knew the company doesnt train anymore, but (believe it or not) Schneider had an excellent training program for new drivers. I was not a trainer for them as I could not qualify according to their strict standards, nor was I trained by Schneider. (I wish I was!)
A potential trainer had to have at least 5 yrs driving, and 1 yr with Schneider. They had to have earned all possible bonus for that year, fuel, idle time, oor miles, on time delivery, and overspeed.
If you met that standard, the company sent you to school for 6 weeks to teach you HOW TO TRAIN! Teaching is a skill, and not everyone can do it. You might be a great driver but a crappy trainer!
The classroom trainers are (were) extremely knowledgeable!
The in truck trainers were NOT ALLOWED to drive ever! The student did all the driving and all the work. Trainers could not use the students logbook to turn more miles.
In short, I feel that Schneider had the best training program b/c they allowed only the best drivers to train. The trainers were carefully screened to ensure they were in it for the right reasons (not just to use training as an excuse to run team miles) and the trainers were graded not on the QUANTITY of warm bodies they could force thru the CDL MILL, but on the QUALITY of drivers that earned their CDL.JustSonny Thanks this. -
Thanks Dave,
I'm interested in knowing about this training because once I've finished the course I'm taking next summer I want the option of doing more comprehensive, intensive training. I'm not thrilled with the idea of spending countless weeks with a trainer but I'm hard-headed, always have been, and I don't want to be cut loose on the highway until I believe I'm ready. Maybe I'll be ready pretty quickly. If so, whoopee! If not, I'd like to get into a program such as the one you described. From what I've read in the forum I've learned that there are some companies that will feed you to to wolves and hope for the best. Scary!!
Thanks for your input,
Oldnewbiegonnabie (I gotta shorten that name once I'm out there, sounds like a Star Wars character)
