On the other side of that concrete wall runs the Intracoastal Waterway in Gulf Shores, AL. There's a concrete bulkhead we sit on while fishing, but it's about 5 feet above the water. So when they caught it, we had to pull the fish around to the marina side where we could reach it with the net. It was pretty cool - I get way more excited when they catch one than when I do!

Moments like this make it (extremely) worth it to deal with being held up in other areas due to a negative past. I'll take a positive present and future any day.

Know anything about fishing in the Virginia beach area? I frequent the area alot and have alway's wanted to do some coastal fishing, but those 6 and 8 hr fishing tour's are too expensive in my opinion. I dont have kid's but get it, my niece get's super excited when she catches a little blue gill, it's pretty fun to watch her

Makes 2 of us. Although I wouldn't want to fish out from the shoreline. I'd rather rent a boat and go out to sea. Bigger fish.

Im not big on bank fishing either, we usually take the boat out, only bank fish if the water is to choppy. You cant really catch those bigger fish from the bank, sometimes but usually not. Does anyone eat the bigger cat's? I get a picture then release the big one's, I cant imagine they would be good eating

I'm not familiar with coastal fishing in Virginia. As mentioned, it would be better to go out on a boat but charters and boat rentals here are so expensive that only the idiot tourists who have WAY too much money would pay them. Last I checked, I think rentals here started at something $150/hour or $450 for the day - uhhh.... no way.

The kids are fine with bank fishing and get excited no matter what they catch. Too, we throw everything back, including the big red and black drums. Usually, we go fishing, throw everything back, then go to a local restaurant owned by Jimmy Buffet's sister and eat. Great food, live music, right on the water, plenty of things for kids to do such as play areas and climbing towers.

A boat would be great. The banks will do until we get a boat. But I have to say that some pretty decent sized fish come through there as do sharks and dolphins.

Yeah, that's what boat rental's/tour's are running in VB, I dont live there but if I did I imagine I would buy a skiff, we have a descent size john boat we use here for the lake. We fish all night in deep water for the big cat's. We only keep pan size cat's, then fry them up the next day. Lol, dont hook one of those big shark's, that could turn out bad.

We did hook one at the pier - it's actually pretty common to see someone hook them. Law says you have to cut the line - no argument from me on that one!

Different rules/regs may apply to offshore fishing, but I'm not sure since I don't go out on boats. Possibly, they don't want anyone to pull a shark up on the pier and get bitten?? Liability issues?
