What companies would give an ex-felon a chance to prove themselves?

There are companies out there that will take you. PTL, Western Express, and Falcon Transportation come to mind off the top of my head. Your felony wasn't drug or theft related so that is one thing in your favor. I'm not going to sugar coat it you are going to have an uphill battle, but if you are serious and stick with it I'm sure you'll get to where you are trying to be.

My advice submit an online app to every company you are interested in then call them up in a few days the worst they can do is say no. I would also check with any small trucking companies in your area knock on a few doors.

 

This Country is known for second chances, if that is all that you got and there's not a pattern formed before or after, you'll find a carrier, if i were you, i would start Craiglist. It might not be the best at first, but once you get experience and no problems with the law, the doors will open. There are thousands of people in prison today and are innocent. If i was in your shoes, i tell them right away, listen, i got this charge in the past, i did time but i got a bad deal. I'm here to work and im a family man! There is no way, a company wont try to help you. Good luck.

 

Appreciate it. I'm not saying I wasn't wrong either, it was my fault but they definitely put the screws to me. In the end, I probably did two or three extra years and the second degree charge, which is a definite job killer, no pun intended.

I'm applying everywhere like crazy, craigslist, etc. Someone I know wants to hire me but he's very small and can't swing the truck and insurance all at the same time, whoever will even insure a new driver wants it all up front. Just talked to him a couple minutes ago, it's not looking good.

 

If only it were that simple DOTY...the OP is asking for help not false hope.....The type of felony which he disclosed on an open forum sure speaks well for him as a person..it ure does. But , in the world we live in today...that and a dollar might get you a coffee. The main and most important hurdle for the OP to get past is gonna be the companies ins. carriers.....that alone will more than likely cut his choice by 50% or greater depending on what places he applies to. I'm not being ugly or mean..I'm trying to give the OP a realistic evaluation of his chances...schools cost money, training costs money and time too...and "some" recruiters will tell him , sure come on go to our school give us your money, knowing lots of times that when the ins. folks see that 2nd degree murder conviction , that he'll be sent home without a job , but in debt for the training...this is the stuff he needs to know..not your feel good , warm AND FUZZY COMMENTS....My apologies to the OP... I went back and saw where the OP already spent the time and money to get a CDL...my bad..my advice to you should have been don't do that til you have a couple of pre-hires before-hand...but you are finding that out for yourself...

 

Carolina cargo out of S.C will take u. Most there are or were in your shoes.they don't pay for #### but that's the cost of gaining experience. Do 12 mo then many doors open!

 

This is the one I was trying to remember! Yeah I've heard that they are felony friendly.

 

Well my advice is dont tell a company until they ask you personally......y do i say this? because I have numerous people who have gotten out of prison with violent crime convictions and got their cdls with now work for respectable companies........I have questioned them and they were like you know how many of the drivers been to prison? and I be like I hope none. And they begin to name off several that they work with. Now i do believe every case is different but I know one person personally who drives for a good company with a murder conviction......he just better hope they never as him to get his haz mat or it might be his last day. I know people are going to rag me for having you lie......but America is built on lies.......Good Luck

 

I was under the impression that most companies do a pre-employment background check on their own ..to your post I call total BS......espcially those companies that require drivers to go into government installations, like ports , or go into Mexico an/or Canada...

 

In response to your post.....you are correct most do but the extent of their check in repect to how far back they go is what makes the difference.....how can you call the post bs when I have two cousins one who got attempt murder/aggravated battery with a fire arm and another who go 2nd degree murder convictions who done 10 and 14 years both working for the same company a good company at that. It ok if you dont believe me but trust me it happens more often than regular people think

 

Yep, already did the school and license, no offense taken by the way. Realism is fine. As far as that particular charge affecting my chances with the insurance, I'm not exactly sure about that, oddly enough. It could in the end, but I haven't seen where it will stated anywhere. I saved for the training and paid it up front. One of my instructors is trying to help me out, that's one of the calls I'm waiting on now. I also have an in, it's local but it's more on the level I was making before. That's my last resort. Doing construction part time til I hear something one way or another. One of the guys from school has a job and wants to team with me, I don't have the heart to tell him I know for a fact his company won't hire me.
