In one week I will graduate from this SAGE school and get my CDL, PTDI certification, my instructor told me I should just start applying for the trucking companies now, but should I apply after I get my CDL?

I got some recruiters coming to the class already, they are Werner, US Xpress, Schneider, Roehl, which should I apply or should I apply to all of them?

Go for the the shotgun approach. It's better to be accepted by a few than be be rejected one at a time.

Easier said than done, It's because if I apply for a few companies and the first one to call me isn't my most preferable company, how should I reply? Can I put them on hold until my favorite one calls me, and if they didn't call me can I call back the companies that I put on hold? What if I got hired from this one company and got fired and can I reapply to the other companies that I turned down?

Most of the training companies will call. You will get a pre hire which means you look good on paper. Most will ask you when you want to attend orientation.

It's not what company you choose, it's what company chooses you. Apply at many, like 10 at least. If a particular company calls you that aren't particularly interested in, put them on hold and call the one company you are waiting for. If they still haven't made a decision, go with the one that calls you. If you think that company sucks, then why did you apply there ? Now go Dude, life's short.....

As said before, leave no stone unturned. The company you overlooked just might offer you something more you wanted that the company you were focused on didn't offer.

Great advice dude but if this doesn't sound stupid, what's the best way to apply?? Do I phone them first? Do I go to all of their sites and fill in the mandatory forms? Do they need my resume? I know apart from recruiting day they 'ain't gonna come knockin'

Oh and by the way 'Hi' to all, I'm Spraggy, a newBrit living in Boise, ID that's just completed 3 weeks in the classroom and will be out, in the yard from Monday getting to know these 'engineering beasts' a lot better!! Apparently we'll be lookin' at some trucks too - :biggrin_255:

Sorry if this has been posted many times before but I'm literally a newbie to everything and welcome all comments inc. 'The Good, the Bad and the downright Ugly'!!

i think the best way to apply is online, then in about 1 week, CALL THEM for a status report on your application. if you were to call BEFORE you apply online, the recruiters would be way too busy. usually when you call someone will then have time to talk to you once they "eye-balled" your online application first when sent via email/online....also many times they will either send you a postcard/letter telling you that you are "pre-hired" and call a specific phone number. or they WILL CALL YOU....

"cold calling will be at times difficult".

you could even go in person to some local companies as well.

i would also recommend a "hard copy" application as well. best times to start applying for jobs is about the "half way point" when in school.

welcome to the colonies by the way...!!!
