I have had my CDL since 2001. I did close to 2 years OTR and then I stopped being OTR and have been driving locally ever since but only driving straight trucks. I am looking to get back into driving class A vehicles again in the hopes I can make more money and better support my family. I have been in communication with Western Expressand Schneider because they both hire out of New Mexico, have refresher training, and offer western states regional. They both seem willing to hire me and give me the refresher training I need, I just don't know which one Ishould go with. Can anyone tell me anything about these 2 companies and help me decide which one would be a better choice? My wife is about to start nursing school and I really want her to just worry about school and not working as much. I'm hoping by going back on the road I can step up and be the sole provider for her and our 2 kids. I need some advice please? Anything you can tell me about Schneider or Western Express that might help me make the best decision for me and my family would be greatly appreciated.
What company to go with?

I went to to Western Express right out of trucking school. Ivwas on the flatbed side. They had miles for days.....the pay was kind of low at that time, but I never sat. Western will help you get your experience back. They can be a good short term option then you can probably get a better otr gig. I made money because I ran in the era of paper logs and they had miles. I just rarely saw the house.
Need4Speed Thanks this. -
Freight is really slow right now. Going back on the road might not pay as well as you think. Look for dedicated but what you really need to do is ask drivers at truck stops about miles. That's what I did after 10 years with Gordon and in 2007 Swift was the only company that drivers didn't complain about miles. Been here 11 years average 2800 miles a week.

He said drives for swift. So yes his freight is slow. Sorry couldn't help myself.
bryan21384 and cuzzin it Thank this. -
I love this! I said freight is slow and y'all assumed I was talking bout Swift. Actually I was referring to the other company drivers that keep complaining about miles. Since I've been driving for Swift (July 2006) my miles are great. Even the typical lag in Jan. and Feb. that I experienced with the now extinct Gordon Trucking isn't an issue. This is why i made the reply to his question. Going long haul isn't a sure thing for making money. You must be sure the company has loads.
Now on the lighter side...
How do you know your wife's cheating on you with a Swift driver?
Because he's still trying to back out the driveway when you come home. -

I am in almost the exact same position as you. Drove for 2 years with roehl back in 2009-2011. Wanted to start a family so got off the road and went into food. Now 2 kids later she is just got accepted into nursing school and I need to double my salary. So moved in next door to my parents so they can help with kids and now it time to go back on the road for a solid year or 2 till I can go local.
I've been talking to western express flatbed. They have a refresher, which sounds like you just go out with a local driver until you can pass the road test. Then a trainer for up to 4 weeks. -
