Probably I would be shopping for trucks in the 1994-2004 (or thereabouts) range with either a Series 60, N14, or 3406E. If you don't care about ELD exemption then some early 2000's stuff would be still be in the sweet spot. Right around 2005-07 is when all the emissions crap started finding it's way in. Some earlier ISX's were EGR-only and those aren't nearly as bad. I drove an 05 Volvo that had one of those motors and it was alright. The DPF model engines are the things to stay away from. Don't buy anything with an International MaxxForce prior to 2012 no matter how good the deal is. Ideally buy something with some hard value. A 379 with CAT power for instance could actually go up in value if you fix it up a little. A shaker with a Series 60 is more of a throwaway truck than can be picked up cheap but either way you are being smart not borrowing money. At least the bank wont come looking for it if it breaks and you have to park it for awhile.

I'm not really a fan of the long nose brick look but they do hold value from what I have seen.
One of the big reasons I'm going owner op is the freedom of it. And it's really hard to justify staying home for the month of dec. If I have a loan insurance and home Bill's due.
I'm looking more for a truck that will be with me for 5 years or so

If you look at anything with a Cummins ISX, earlier versions were a DOHC set with a lower pressure fuel system that is run off the 2nd camshaft. They had a designation of CM870 and CM871. The later versions were a SOHC with high pressure fuel system that is less reliable than the earlier version. It also had some other issues, being they were emissions system equipped, had liners that sink (dealing with this right now), some camshaft issues iirc. The egr will also cause some soot buildup in the cyl's.

Your best bet is to find something that is pre-dpf, but not neccesarily pre eld. Something that has a good documented maintenance history.

Lot of very good deals on trucks today.

So good. Looks like the scammers are hitting it hard. No mention of them being READY TO WORK though.
