I've been working in the oil & gas industry for the past year and a half. In March I went to a cdl school and got my class A. The oilfield has busted and I'm not making the same kind of money I did. It's not worth being away from all my friends and family anymore. I want to haul local for JB Hunt but the ad in their site says 3 months driving experience required. At my current job I haul hazmat on a gooseneck trailer and dually pick up truck. Can I count this as driving experience? It's not tractor trailer but CDL is required for hazmat and I run a log book etc.
What counts as driving experience?

It's worth listing. May not be full sized tractor-trailer experience, but, some sort of experience is better than none. List it.
BarackYomama Thanks this. -
Just be vague. Unless the question is very specific I'd tell them it was a combination vehicle hauling hazmat.
BarackYomama Thanks this. -
Sure, list it. You got some experience from doing this so list it. All they can say is no.
-
I would list it. I would even argue with an employer that doubted it. Those duelly/gooseneck combinations CAN be and often are harder to maneuver then your classic 18 wheeler.
That said, JB hunt will not consider it experience. If it is not hauling freight for a mega-crap company or a LTL the mega-crap will say it counts for ####. How do I know, I drove dump truck/trailer and crane for a year before ever hauling freight. Everybody including JB said that is #### and doesn't count for ####. I thought that was BS then and now after driving both, I can say for sure it is BS.
Anyhow, I am not a fan of mega-crap like JB and would look elsewhere to use your skills. Some will count it as experience even if you did tell them exactly what you drive. On the other hand, most will not ask exactly what you drove, and even if you did lead them to believe you drove something different, almost none will check up on it. Not that I condone lying, but that is the truth. -

Thank you sir. I'm not a big fan of the mega carriers mostly because of the work/life balance vs. what they pay. But central/southern Maryland has very few options, -

Don't lie...tell them you have no experience driving a class 8 heavy truck w air brakes with a 53 ft trailer....then offer them your past qualifications as a safe driver.

Yep tell them what you have done and if possible get your references lined up oilfield work is no joke they are big on safety it will count for something.
