As most otr/long haul and cross border operators require 1-2 years experience, what experience would they consider? I am hoping out of school to take local work ie: contruction/dump truck to have me home every night. Trying to get experience under my belt while kids are in their late teens so when they leave the nest... So can I. Is it imperative that my experience contain straight truck/trailer time?

Here in the states when they want exp they mean OTR exp.But not all companies are like that. You go with a mega company they may want you to get the exp before driving for them.Small to med size carriers may work with you.A straight trk does not count as exp.

Call zavitz or zavcor they are both in your area and tell them you want to work for them in a year or 2, they will tell you what they will look for. They do a lot of trips from Ontario to ny/nj/etc. and pull a lot of banana loads back. I'm sure they do drop and hooks at their yard and local drivers do the pickups and deliveries. Old trucks but steady work. Drivers seem to be happy there, haven't heard otherwise.

You can also call Gibson, tell them the same thing. They'll tell you what you need.

I can tell you from experience at least in the states here I was running a 10 speed tandem dump truck for an asphalt company also behind that tandem I pulled the 35 foot flatbed with a Paving machine rolling machine and Bobcat on it and no one would count that as experience as far as tractor trailer yeah ran that setup for two years I wasn't doing it to try and gain experience I just needed to be home every night at that particular time in my life but no dice would not count it for me good luck there in your venture

The industry as a whole seems to vary so much between Canada and USA as far as schooling and training goes. I'm very curious to see after making calls tomorrow if it carries through to experience needed for otr. My whole purpose for AZ schooling now is to get that 2 years experience so I want to be sure I take the right steps coming out of school... If given the chance to find a carrier that will give me trailer experience. Seems a catch 22, but I'll do anything I can to get where I want to be.

I got my first job by putting pure bull on the application. Right out of my 1 month CDL school I was hired to drive tankers hauling hazmat chemicals. I got paid well, acquired the magic 2 years and, after that, it was a piece of cake to get another job.
BTW....part of my "bull" was that I drove a straight tanker fueling airplanes at an airport (which doesn't require a CDL). When the owner died the company folded. lol
Good luck, driver. We need more women in this profession !

You could sign on with one of the Mega carriers that will provide more training. You will be working for almost nothing for 3 months and then at a low age for about one year. It is very regimented but after you are done any carrier will take you. Bison comes to mind. Personally I will not be treated like a slave but this is an option.

Take first job opportunity with truck and look from there. Locally there is a trucking school and they also have trucks and equipment but their help wanted ad on kijiji states "3 years experience" I don't know how they pedal their course with ad like that to follow all their BS tv ads about career opportunities.
You may consider hauling feed in your area. Getting paid for every hour is better than sitting at a loading dock or border crossing on your own dime
    good luck
