Does anyone know why there would be such a high sign on bonus? When applying for my first trucking job ever, what should I question about a job offer like this? $5,000 is alot of money, I'm not understanding what it is about this route that they would offer $5,000 to the driver who gets the job...I would like some insight, high dollar offers make me suspicious that theres something here im not taking into consideration...Theres not alot of info given, what questions would ask about this type of offer?
thank you,
Nightwind

Usually its for things such as a re-location bonus or you might have to stay with the company for X amount of time before they give you a sign-on bonus

Look at the * Says based on experience and location. So you might get there and they say oh we will hire you, but you don't have experience. So you can't get the sign on bonus. Also location. They may say you are 5 miles outside of the required hiring area. So you won't qualify. They also only give you some of the money. So you get 200 dollars every few months and then the larger sum close to your year with them. Then all of a sudden before you can get the large sum. You are let go because you are not a right fit for the company. Beware of the scams my friend and or Get use to them.

Under the pay and benefits section where it says $5,000 sign on bonus*, it has a asterisk ( * ) next to it, read a little farther down and it says it, *based on experience and location. A lot of companies will pay sign on bonus's to those coming in with experience, usually paid in installments while they are employed there. Such as the company I am with offering a $2000 sign on bonus for minimum 1 years experience OTR, $3000 for 2+ years OTR, $4000 for 4+ OTR. First paycheck received $500, each 30,000 miles I receive $500 until the $2000 is met.

Jobs sure do like glamourizing their ads don't they.Sign on bonus can be very misleading. Many think im here hired now where's my sign on bonus. That means you have to be there so long before you're eligible for it.Which I think in most cases its a yr.KB gave me a sign on bonus and didn't know I had it coming. But one check was real high and asked payrole about it.That ad says up to 54,000,what they're really saying is up to 30,000 a yr.Up to 6 k tutition reimbursement, not a chance sucker is what they're really saying.Everything you read, you put your own words into it.This company is like every other company, they'll say anything the driver wants to hear.

As a wannabe you're not going to get a $5K sign on bonus. Your sign on bonus is that they'll repay your trucking school tuition up to $6K, which is a fair deal.
The word experienced always means at least 1 full year of OTR or 3 years of combined driving. And advertised bonuses are just that, you have to qualify for them.Nightwind8830 Thanks this. -

the more i read the more i ask myself what im really getting into here...from the eyes of a wanna be trucker it looks like theres money here and potential to be able to earn enough, over time, for a home and to pay off debt ect...no college needed,no business casual attire,no cublicle and no limits... but #### it seems like theres alot of strings attached that aren't clearly defined in these job offers.#### man, its scary. I hope i didnt make a mistake getting my cdl. i gotta go ahead now, my current job is letting people go like crazy and im relying on getting some kind of trucking job in the next month or so.seems like i've got to jump into one spiders web or another job wise, its just a matter of finding out which company will #### you less when you're new. my driving school is NOT any kind of help ,they send new drivers to small local businesses which, quite honestly, are owned by immigrants who seem to be friends with the company owners or a least long time business contacts.idk.
Any suggestions on companys who treat new truckers decently? Schneider sounds like my best bet so far. -
