Also, I did wind up leaving my Desktop PC at my parents' house. I wasn't sure if that would be damaged by Summer or Winter temperatures either stored in the car or even in a Storage Unit.

I'm now a yard spotter and have my stuff with me again working locally for now.

My recomendation is some place warm with out snow. Grin. Warmer climates you dont need to worry about heating. California (west side of state) is running out of water (as most cities will eventually with over population). Yet there are places that are not built up that one might set up a homestead.
-Arid means water is a premium and wells go down a long ways. Here in Maine a average well is 300 feet unless you have a spring where water percolates to the surface. Out in California I have heard of wells going 1200 feet. At $20 a foot you do the math, yet drilling a well is around 5k just to have a well drilling truck show up.
-Septic systems (leach field and septic tank) are about 5k.
-Power Supply. Depending on how far you are from power. A construction company can set power poles and string the wire for about $500 a pole. Each pole is 200' from power line. Dont let people tell you off grid is cheaper. Off grid is fine for running a fridge and maybe a washing machine, yet willl cost about 20k. More house means larger solar system.
-Foundation for a home with full basement (8' deep with 8" thick walls 24'x32') will run about 8k
-Plumber? That is up to you. I hired a fellow whom was in his apprentice at 25 an hour and did my whole home for about a grand.
-Electrician? You can do it yourself if you want. Just learn what permits require. My wiring isnt perfect, yet it will pass a inspection. Yes it was inspected.
-Permits. Sticky situation. Check with where your going to be. Some places that are rural enough wont require permitting, just a general knowledge of what your doing will suffice.
-General contractor. Ok here it is really tough. There is a reason why contractor rates are so high. People change their minds as they are not the ones building the home. Changing your mind adds 10k each time you change your mind and 6 months to build it. (doubt me? Go watch pure living for life on youtube. Prime example). I roughed my house together and was living in it in 6 months.
-Loans. Alas that means everything must be permitted. Banks want to protect their money. So expect to buy home owners insurance.
-If you can save money your ahead of the game.
-If you retire and have zero family, you may want to get something like Honor House in Seattle. My parents went there. You buy an apartment for about 600k. No cost there after. You have to be a retiree. Meals are provided in a restaurant. Gym and pool available. On staff medical comes with the purchase.

Just my 2 pennies of what I have learned from building three homes.

That's a good idea. That's kinda what I did. Finally settled on Austin,Texas or Las Vegas,Nevada and Las Vegas was the winner. I really like Austin,TX though and for some of the same reasons Jeff Bezos may put a new Amazon headquarters there. Did he make a final decision?
On the other end of the spectrum, as compared to those two places; Telegraph,Texas for quiet, solitude and climate. The climate in this area is characterized by hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Telegraph has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps

My girlfriend and I were 'homeless' truckers living out of the truck for over a year with our dog. It was great, anything we didn't take with us was left with family members in Washington or Missouri. But it was frustrating trying to explain to businesses that we had no physical address. Especially dealing with our credit union who refused to use our P.O. Box.

Eventually though she was getting burnt out, she wasn't a driver and had a hard time appreciating the constant traveling and then we ended up with our son. So now she's at home with him, wish I could take them both with me though.

    A question for the board.
Would carrier companies ( employer) allow you to receive personal mail at their hub/yard? USA2ME.com offers a mail service with an actual physical address. Wouldn't that work?

Once you have gone past the training, most companies will allow it. Good way to keep its employees.

I heard a truck fleet owner Monday. Talking about all his new trucks. Would be the small bunks.
He also had a 100% no pet in trucks. Drivers were having to sign that there would not be anything other then the driver in the truck.
He is buying 200 new trucks in the next 19 months. So guess he will be looking for a lot of drivers.

I guess it depends on the company... ask them. My company has offered me to use their physical address for mail but I like the privacy of having a PO Box.
When I was searching companies, there was one that wanted my physical address on my driver's license... at that time I was a GA resident and had my PO Box on my driver's license. I didn't go there...:biggrin_25512:
I think that UPS also offers physical addresses with their PO Boxes...
