OTR? LTL? Regional? Dedicated?
Now, I know OTR means "over the road". I believe that means all over the country. I assume regional means just what it says, regional. Haha. What do LTL and Dedicated mean?
What do these terms mean?

LTL= less than truckload. Takes usually a pallet or two from multiple different shippers to fill up a pup(28ft trailer)
Dedicated means just that. Running back and forth to a single customer, example walmart. you run back and forth from a distribution center to a certain walmart or something. -
For some carriers OTR may mean you can expect to run any/all 48 states, but they typically operate in a 20-35 states primarily. For others, OTR may mean all states east of the Mississippi. Just depends on their primary area of concentration and if they care to go to CA or WA. Many do not want to and as such that cuts down their operating area considerably even though they may still label themselves a 48 state carrier.

i work a dedicated run/account.
my company specializes in such accounts.
automotive dealership parts deliveries as an example.
every night, 5 nights a week i work. my work (my route) is done in less than 8 hours each night, so i log only about 35-38 hours per week, and still make a great pay.
for me, i like doing dedicated, it is now my 4th dedicated job. however, the customer can AND WILL drop the company at ANY TIME, under contract. this HAS HAPPENED to me twice.
i either had to go "in the system" or seek other employment. i chose to seek other employment, as i have done the OTR crap years ago, and i will NOT do it anymore. i like being home daily, and having a "set schedule", over a job where i don't know how long i will be sitting, or how long before i get home for my what, 36, maybe all of a 48 hour time off..when ever the company "decides" i deserve to get home...???
the others have already said what the other jobs are. -
Hmmm? So with OTR, you could be gone for several months without seeing home? Where do you go when you're sitting?
-
Most companies will give you one day at home for every 7 out.....I'm out about 24-28 days and home for 4. BUT, the longer you stay out, the more miles you can run and the more money you can make.
Sometimes you will sit for 34hrs after you run through your 70, but that doesn't happen every week unless you are able to run hard. Then you plan on sitting in a truckstop and maybe getting in some sightseeing, but usually you are too tired and a lot of drivers do their laundry and clean their truck during this time. -
LTL= Left Too Late~ need to come up with an excuse for the receiver.
Regional= "Did you see that driver's gut? It wasn't big, IT WAS REGIONAL!!!"
Dedicated= Was home for the second kid's birth, might make it back for his graduation...
