The Cat 3406E is great motor for fuel mileage once you change the stock exhaust manifold and turbo and replace with the custom molded manifold and larger turbo like PDI and Pittsburgh Power sells. Mine picked up 6/10ths mpg from this change alone. The reason is the manifold flows alot better and the larger turbo may not spool up as fast as the stock turbo, but it has more top end power and allows you to cruise on flat land road with almost zero boost that is where you fuel savings comes from and with the long stroke Cat motor allows you to lug it down at lower rpms with using much boost.

I love my Cat 3406E in my aerodynamic Volvo 770.

I know .shoot. I don't blame him , for being careful. I did a lot of searching , myself, before I pulled the trigger.
But , he has found some good deals , and I probably would have gone ahead and bought , on at least one , by now ! LOL !

LOL! I could , but it wouldn't meet your standards in Some way , and all my effort would be for nothing . Then I'd be really POed !
For example , the guy with the one , one owner , all records , but wouldn't let you take it , what , 400 miles for a Dyno run . And because of that , you walked away? That seemed such a sweet deal , I'd have probably bought it anyway . In that particular case , I'd have done a test drive , taken an oil sample , and if it came back good bought the truck and then had it dynoed. But that's just me.
Good luck ! I hope you find exactly what you're looking for ! Even if it takes all year. LoL!

For $6k I don't see how you can go wrong even if you have to do an overhaul soon. Why don't you buy that one?

For $6K, you'd be so far ahead unless it was a total wreck or flood vehicle. Drop another $15K into it and you WOULD have a fresh inframe WITH papers.

the C12's in our fleet are getting better mileage than the C15's.
