Never go through the city at morning or evening rush. Daytime can also be bad but between 8pm and 5am it is usually acceptable.

Morning rush stopped on:
294 north
55 north and south
94 north
90/94 south/east

Evening rush stopped:
294 south
55 north and south
94 north and south

80 east and west is tight both rush hours. But fridays in summer 80 near the IL/IN border can/will be a log jam.

Throw in the all-too-often 4 wheeler bumper car show and any road can back up at any time.

Keep the CB on to hear updates and use google maps with real time traffic layer on to see what is moving and what is not. It is accurate well over 95% of the time. Down to the half mile.
