I have a CDL and went to trucking school and want to be a trucker, but I had an OWI 2 1/2 years ago, The only company that will take me is Werner and I have orrientation set for April 20th.

But here is the thing, I am a concrete worker that gets laid off every winter and gets unemployment, 345$ a week and my boss call me up and wants me to start work again next week. But the construction feild is also slow and I dont know how busy he can keep me this summer.

So I can work for him this summer and try to become a trucker next winter, or I can start now for Werner....What Should I DO??

until freight picks up its a toss-up. how much would you make working for him? how much did your cdl school cost? will you remember what you learned in school after 6-8 months? also if you decide to wait on trucking you will probably be getting back into it during the fall and winter months. ever driven a fully loaded semi in the snow or ice at night when you're dog tired and still have a few hours to go. these are just a few questions i came up with. werner is not the worst place to start but if you want to learn this industry you gotta jump in and do it. hopefully whatever you decide it will benfit you and yours. best of luck with you're decision.

Ask your boss if he thinks he's gonna do well by you. If so, you might wait for freight and the economy to pick up. But don't forget your time restrictions on your schooling.

    Thanks for your input,

I would make around 400$ take home with a 40 hour week...but hours are not garenteed. Some weeks Are 50 hours and some are 30, and some weeks I could be laid off.

But it is a secure job so I know I will make at least 300 a week, It is very backbreaking work... each forrm is about 100 pounds and in one day I could set a hundred of them and the next day take them down and do it all over again..

As the trucking goes... I have always wanted to do it and have just been waiting until I was 23 years old, My school was 2500$ and Werner said they would pay it back. But people say alot of bad things about them, like I might not even get a truck when Im done training.

You could end up in truck driving school again. I waited two months after finishing truck driving school to accept a position and was starting to receive warnings that If I didn’t accept an offer soon, my schooling would be too old. I wanted to work the docks at an LTL company and work into driving so that I could be at home every night instead of every two to four weeks. The LTL companies all told me the same thing, working the docks and working into city driving was pre 9/11/2001 and that the insurance companies all required experience because all of the LTL companies were HAZ-MAT. I did not want to go over the road, but that was the only way I could get experience.

is there as reason that you waited till you turn 23 to go trucking you can do it a 21. I mean i know construction was good 2 years ago just curious.
