What type of device do you use to connect to the net while on the road? I am looking at the different hotspots from the various carriers but they all seem to be pretty slow and inconsistant. I have also read that the connections at the truck stops are also inconsistant.

Do you tether your phone to your laptop? Do you use a wifi hotspot? Do you rely on free wifi from places like mcdonalds and starbucks?

We have a Verizon MiFi pad, $50 a month, 5 GB and not tooo many places that I don't have service. I don't do FB but watch alot of Netflix and YouTube and manage 2 different load boards. In 2 years I've only gone over once, and they charged me $10 for every GB I went over, so not too bad.

Do you have issues streaming netflix? Is it choppy or does it buffer a lot? From the test I saw in PC Magazine the average was 1.5mb down (watching a stream) and .5mb up (uploading pictures or video).

It's not too bad, to be honest. It's just going to depend where you are. The only place I seem to have horrible service is NM. And honestly.... who doesn't there?? What we try to do is when we stop at a TA, Petro or Flying J, we will buy their wifi and use it to watch movies. It's $5 for 24 hrs. and saves on our G's. When you are streaming in HD it always uses more.

ive had fair luck with virgin mobile card. buffering is a bit of an issue sometimes, but not too often. ta is best in my experience with truckstop hotspots. and being the cheap #### that i am, i pay for them by the year. if i use it 4 times a month, its a better deal than paying 24 hours at a time. i look to stop at a ta whenever its convenient...also prefer their ts in general to pilot/loves/j. better service and conditions overall in general imo.

We did as well till the reserved parking stunt! Now Flying J's are fast becoming our favs. Got some free wifi from the, the other day and watched 5 hrs of The Walking Dead w/ NO interruptions.

Don't you love when you roll in at 1500 and half the spots are taken and the other half are reserved?

to the OP, I tether to my iPhone. Save data by buying by the month at ts. the connection on the iPhone is plenty to stream hulu/netflix, at pilot it's good enough if it's not peak time.

    Verizon MiFi.
Mine is $80 per month for 10GB, and $10 per GB after that.
It works pretty well in most areas, with the exception of MD.

Netflx is no problem. You might want to use the lower res option to save bandwidth.
But sometimes, no matter where, if the system (Verizon's) is overloaded you will have a very slow transfer rate even with a good signal.

I have no problem making a $120 bill each month.

Thanks for the replies. I currently have Sprint and for an additional fee I can setup the phone to be tether-able. If I do that then I wont have to worry about data limits since the phone plan is unlimited.
