A serious question that I think many drivers may take for granted or may just not ask themselves enough. My venture with this forum is to actually get some ideas for ways to change not only the industry but also they way companies hire and work with the O/O.
I am trying to come up with some new ideas to pitch to my boss. I work in the Safety department and do some recruiting. Though it mainly consists of answer questions when a perspective O/O calls.

I have tried to breech this subject but have yet to be able to get any viable responses.

If you were looking for a different company to lease onto as an O/O what would you want that company, not only to offer you but to actually present to you in the whole package?

I'm not looking for any gimmicks or slide of hand subjects. I just want a true O/O opinion on what you DESERVE to be offered not just what you are handed in this industry.

Fleet operators please feel free to join in as well.

Have contracts with shippers for $3+ a mile loads, detention pay after 1 hour.
Company offers the O/O 98% of linehaul + 100% of fuel surcharge :smt033

    Amen,...

I wish I didnt feel like I was talking to a used car salesman 90% of the time when I'm on the phone with a broker. That or I get the let me talk to my manager a sec. Just like a car salesman. Look Tom,.. its not that difficult,.. its either yes you can do it,. or no you cant. Save the speech for someone who hasnt already heard it. Why make it so complicated?

I have 3 flatbeds, what drives me crazy is paying for fuel and repairs every day and waiting to get paid every other day or week. I really liked working with brokers that paid right away, and Mercer was one of my favorites because they paid right away and can do fuel advances WITH OUT BEING CHARGED A FEE!

I also find getting paid for TONU, and detention was impossible. Everything else in this industry gets paid right away for transportation services, taxi, plains, rentals, pizza, but not trucking and all of them have a canceling fee to pay the drivers.

The problem I face is no one knows who we are or what we offer, or why they should move over. I want to get the word out and the drivers do some good recruiting problem is. (from a recruiting stand point not the drivers) that they too busy running loads to spend any time in truck stops to talk to other drivers other than getting their fuel and rolling on.
if you have any comments on that, let em roll.

Further, what about the industry, I know from my experience some of the biggest issues I faced while driving weren't even the "HOS" rules the DOT put out but rather that some customers just don't care. They work on their schedules and you have to make it work be it legal or not.
So my next question is how as an industry can we start forcing customers to help us stay legal.
The O/O makes up for only 9% of the drivers on the road. I know the only way to get change is by getting the BIG companies to work with each other and stop knuckle bashing to peek the bottom line. So how can we get everyone on the same page?

I am lost on your whole thread. Why are you talking to Owner Operators to recruit them to your company? Are you a shipper? An Owner Operator does not work or drive for anyone, they find freight, book the load, and deliver it. I dont know what a company would do for them?

No I am not trying to recruit.
Most O/O lease on to a company run under their authority through a company's agents or brokers.
Independent O/O Have their own authority and broker their own loads.

I am asking what makes them want to work for one company over the other. Most companies are cookie cutting the same things. offering the same things. paying the same percentage. So my question still stands what is it that you are looking for that no one has offered you yet?

Lease Operator is the driver who is purchasing a truck through a company.

Owner Operator is the driver who own his truck.

Independent Operator Runs under his own authority.
