Grew up truckin, pretty sure it was spinning that way long before me and will keep spinning that way long after I'm gone. -
Had a friend who was leased to Landstar, he saw the revenue I made as a carrier,,got his own authority but got upset having to wait 10 to 30 days for his invoices to be paid,,started dealing with factors,,they advertised 3% fees to get paid 24 hrs after they received the paper work,,usually about 24 to 72 hours after he unloaded..But since he did a very small amount of billing his fees were 7% ,,it worked out to an APR over 400%. He then hauled a couple loads for mercer,,they had terminal pay,,so he had to drive 50 to 100 miles to a terminal but he got his money..After a while he was living running for load to load for money,,He then leased to Mercer,,bragged that he made $1.50/ mile for most of his loads but most loads were only 300 to 350 loaded miles,,could not prebook a load,,could not go on a load board until he was empty. On long loads to the west coast he would get $1,30 going west and then sit in LA o Vegas for over a week to get a load paying $1.05/mile going back east.
He was making over $2/mile running on his own but was willing to run for a lot less to get paid faster,,he found out that many O/Os at Mercer were hobby truckers, lots of retires military that trucking was just a little added money to their retirement checks, He found that the good paying 300 to 350 mile loads he lost at least took 2 days to pick a load,,load it run it and unload,,lucky to get 1200 to 1500 miles week,,
If you have to factor your invoices don't go on your own,,if you are leased to a carrier 'Federal Regs" say your carrier must pay you with in 7 days...If you deal with a broker ask for quick pay with no fees a lot of the time they will agree if they really need to move the load and don't be afraid to ask for more when a broker makes you an offer,,most times I have no problem getting 10-15% more that what a broker first offers. -
for example, if ya haul for mercer on a brokered load they will give you an efs card and will put your settlement on it within a couple hours of receiving paperwork. you can use it to get the same discount guys leased to mercer get.
the fleet avg for all miles, loaded and empty is around 1.72 a mile.
you can prebook loads, you don't have to be unloaded. example right now, I have a load on, have one booked to load Friday at 3.30 a mile on 930 miles, and one booked for Monday when I unload tha one.
if ya run 300 mile loads each day, how would you end up with more than 1500 miles???
but I avg over 2.00 a mile for speedometer mile, do 2,000 miles a week max, don't run the west coast, and do just fine.
you can save someone from themselves, apparently your friend is 3 slices short of a loaf. -
and its 15 days , not 7 days
