What are the minimum insurance requirements (FMCSA) needed to haul HAZMAT? I thought it was higher than $1,000,000?

I assume HAZMAT requires more than the $750k minimum. Can anyone tell me specifically what the requirements are?

Thankyou for reminding me why I never got my Hazmat. I never wanted all the hassle. Sad part is I think I am going to have to go get it soon. I am not looking forward to it.

    Part 387.9 list the requirements.

Any type of HM, including Class 9 requires $1,000,000 some of the more serious stuff requires $5,000,000.

    Be safe.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction! That helps. Is there a minimum on the cargo coverage? Or just liability.

    (c) Motor common carriers: Cargo liability. Security required to compensate shippers or consignees for loss damage to property belonging to shippers or consignees and coming into the possession of motor carriers in connection with their transportation service, (1) for loss of or damage to property carried on any one motor vehicle—$5,000, (2) for loss of or damage to or aggregate of losses or damages of or to property occurring at any one time and place— $10,000.

I believe you'll find most shippers want more cargo insurance than the minimum requirements.

    Be safe.

From some of the comments I've seen elsewhere, shippers will probably want to see $1,000,000 in cargo liability insurance before they contract with you. Can't say that with any certainty myself, but I can understand why that would be the case - and a good idea. A little CYA is always a good thing.
