what exactly does your own authority mean?

Good way to get a guy into a lot of trouble with that.

First movement off the farm is limited to 150 miles to be exempt.

Not if he had a DOT number. You are maybe thinking the "farm use" exclusion. a better example would be Walmart. they dont have an MC on there truck because they do not haul for any one for hire. they only haul Walmart owned/purchased products.

A farmer can do the same thing, but would not do it under his farm use, but rather as a registered USDOT carrier, but he would have to drive home empty, that is not good busniess so most farms that have their own truck go and get there MC to get freight back home.

Yep, I'm saying the same as BigJ's post above. We hauled for many years through ON, NY, PA with nothing more than a DOT number so I'm not clear on what trouble you're referring to. Exempt from what? Please educate me or perhaps correct your post so as not to misdirect the OP.

You don't have to own your own trailer. We have had our own authority for 7 years and the company we haul for refuses to let us buy our own trailer because they make 20% rent off of what we haul. We have our own authority - we rent the trailer which is all their expense. And we haul the loads they set up for us. Everything else is our responsibility including DOT# and regs, MC# IRS (you will pay a heavy road use tax - 2290 - every July). There is so much to know - we go with a permit company that helps us with all of this including sending in our monthly fuel & mileage and reminding us when IRP (International Registration Plan) is due and we only pay them $15 per month. Don't know where you are located but we are in Iowa and our company is out of Altoona, Iowa called Permits Plus, Inc. They have been lifesavers!

ITs NOT about the trailer, ITs about who owns the product your hauling. If you are the owner/seller of the goods, you dont need an authority you only need a DOT number.
