My biggest concern is going without a shower. Do a lot of stops have showers? What else can I expect or not expect. Share some of your truck stop "all-the-conveniences-of-home" stories.
What facilities can I expect from a typical truck stop?

Showers are pretty easy to find and free with fuel purchase. You may have to wait in line, which is normal. As far as finding a "clean" shower, well I just hope you're not too squeamish. Get you a pair of shower shoes and carry your own supplies, and you'll be fine.

Bring shower shoes and lysol, Turn a black light on in there and it'll look like a crime scene off of csi!
Hope you like Sh#tty food!
Flush twice it's a long way to taco bell!
Always keep your doors locked in the truck, lot lizards, zombies, they will attack you sooner or later. Keep your eyes open!
Good Luck! -
Wow, some people act like they never played sports or anything. I've been out here for 12 years (minus a couple hauling gas). The showers are fine, especially in the larger chain truck stops. 50 gal. of fuel will get a free shower put on your card. Each chain has a "Driver payback" card that keeps you showers on it. So when you get to a truck stop for the first time go in to the counter and get one.
As far as what to expect in there. They are cleaned more often than your shower at home. It's just like a mini bathroom. You have a stand-up shower, sink and toilet, and a stool or bench to sit on to put your clothes on. Shower shoes (flip flops) are a good idea, but not because
I swear, I don't know why privileged sissies get into truck driving. Stay home if you want your lavish, pristine, marble encased bath rooms. -
I am not a privileged sissy, as you so eloquently put it. I am of the same opinion as previous posters. Some of the places I have stopped at are not for the squeamish.
I believe you should do your job well, even if your job is to clean the showers at a truck stop. Unfortunately too many people don't think that they need to do it well, since it doesn't pay enough, they don't care or whatever other reason.
There are a few shining examples out there. Jubitz, Little America, and even a few of the big name ones are outstanding.
I won't fuel, or take showers, or spend my hard earned money at the truck stops that are nasty, have rude personnel or treat me like I am a nuisance.
Expecting cleanliness does not make me prissy. I think way too many people are willing to set their standards lower, rather than speak up about some of the pig stys we stop at.gearjammer-2000 and leannamarie Thank this. -
I have been blogging our experiences as I have joined my husband full time on his truck. Of course, this is coming from a woman's perspective, but I have written about and taken pictures of showers and truck stops and the whole experience. I cook our meals on the truck and rarely eat out. Not only is it too expensive, but for the most part, it's pretty tasteless at the truck stop restaurants (a few exceptions, granted). On the whole, most places are decent, some are awful and a few intolerable. You have more options than truck stops, we try for rest stops whenever possible, they often have very clean restrooms and you can get fresh air to boot. Easy 75bisciuteater! "clean as your bathroom at home" not likely! I used to work at a truck stop(Petro) and can tell you cleaning and sanitizing showers and bathrooms isn't done as often as you think. I always take pride in the jobs i do, even the #### ones and let me tell you that was a #### one! Other employees didn't feel the same way though.
I just wanted to see how the other half lived though, I promptly went home to the safe confines of my parents marble encased bathroom, thought of you and took a dump.
As far as playing sports, what the hell does that have to do with anything? You aching to see someones junk again? Face!Burn! -

Okay we seem to have established that their are showers of varying degrees of cleanliness. As far as restrooms you can clean them once an hour and fifteen minutes after you clean them and they get a rush, somebody is going to complain about how filthy they are, it is just a part of life, indeed there are some real dives out there from time to time, not a bad idea to carry a little alcohol based cleaning pad in your pocket just in case. .
On another note, laundry is available at the bigger T/S like Petro, Flying J, and TA. Sometimes Pilot and Loves have laundry.
TV/Movie rooms basically the same Pilot and Loves rarely but sometimes, such as Bosselmans which will have a Pilot sign.
Hair Stylist/Barber services are available in dwindling supply at the bigger parking lot T/S.
Sometimes a Massage, Dentist, Chiropractor may be available.
Sometimes a chapel is available.
The first service other than fuel and some form of food from a convenience store, to fast food, to a sit down restaurant, is a shower. -
Well, let me tell you about truck stops. First off, truck stop owners know nothing about being a trucker. Their reasoning is, we will build a truckstop and sell fuel and trinkets and hot dogs and hire $5.00 an hr help and rake in the money. I had to laugh when a certain truckstop opened up in Ozona, Tx in the late '70,s supposedly by a retired trucker that knew what truckers wanted. Har, har, har. Guess he thought truckers wanted expensive everything.
On the subject of showers, most places do a fair job of cleaning. Sometimes, the cashier will have to go and "clean" a shower, especially at 5 am. No night shift crew, I guess. Most truck stops don't seem to ever have enough help, I hate Pilot's way of "one counter for everyone" . You have to remember that a lot of people come thru their doors. The employees don't make the mess at the coffee pot area or the gas/fuel area or the rest room area etc. You think the shower area is funky? think about a $25 motel room. Yikes! It is comical how everyone on here insinuates how clean they are and how dirty everyone else is....And I really laugh when a driver says his/her truck is clean inside AND they have a dog! Sure thing, right. The dog runs around the parking lot, then gets in the truck and on the bed. Now, that's clean...... -
OP.
Several points:
1) Stick to the main chain truck stops like Flying J, Love's and you should be OK.
2) Even if the shower seem clean ALWAYS wear shower flip flops or sandals and carry your own towel. You can hang it up on in the sleeper when done using it.
You really can get fungus from walking on public washroom floors barefoot and rashes from using their towels.
