Ok i have a question, im going to school in march, currently i have a decent paying job my wife and i are wanting to try life on the road. Before i ask, yes i know this wont be immediate and i know i will have to ride with a trainer abit before being cutloose. But what are some things i can stock up on before i swap careers? I doubt most company trucks come with fridges, inverters etc... I know i will probably need a good gps, what about cooking or tv equipment? The reason i ask is id like to find most of the items online so i dont get raped by truckstops while on the road. Just curious, what brands work best for you?
what gear do i need for a company truck?

I prefer using 110 volt appliances with an inverter.
Alot of the 12 volt cookware is JUNK !!!
ymmv......readytotruck84 Thanks this. -
at first, you wont need to much, as your trainer should have the proper tools, once on your own, Gloves, tire gauge, airpressure line, tire thumper (hammer will due), rags or paper towels for checking fluids, cresent wrench, screw driver (flat and phillips), duck tape, electrical tape, socket set (standered and metric), extra fan belts (company should supply, If company driver), Extra gallon of oil, and antifreeze, this should be a good start

I appreciate it, looking at some of the sites your right alot of it didnt look to trustworthy, i forgot to ask about laundry, im hoping for alot of OTR time especially with the little woman riding shotgun, i havent seen any laundry facilities at the truck stops, and we dont plan on going back home for awhile unless the company asks me too. What size are the bunks?

There is laundry at some truck stops. Get a truck stop guide. I use that and apps on my phone to find laundry facilities. The mattress in my truck is a twin xl. The other stuff, what you should buy, I think will really depend on what company you go with and if they allow inverters. Appliances...my truck has an APU and an inverter. I have a microwave and coffee maker now, thinking about picking up one of those george foreman things. I'm using one of those 12 volt coolers for now. In time I might actually spring for one of the 12 volt fridges. I'd really try to make sure you go with a good starter company though, one that has apus and inverters or will let you have an inverter installed. Makes your comfort level go up a lot.

Sure apprreciate the info mike, your definitly right that seems to be the million dollar question for a newbie, i have looked at the reviews on tons of the companies on here, i was looking into kllm not sure if they are the best but i dont hear as much negativity about them as some of the others such as werner, swift etc, im sure the pay is low no matter where you start im just hoping for a good trainer and some good experience OTR, i started at the bottom in the towboating industry and worked my way up into the wheelhouse, i spend 84 hours a week in the chair driving 675 foot of barges all over. I have been blessed in 8 years with no accidents. I have a good safe attitude, hoping to get the best experience starting out, i dont wanna end up the talk of the truckstop because i cant back my rig into the hole.

There's very litte you will need to have right away. My advice would be to wait until you are in a truck, then start doing some shopping. Every time I switch trucks, I end up spending money, because things I had in one truck don't fit in the next. Besides, every driver is different and wants different things. You mention a GPS. I've driven many years without one, and any company with the new elogs system has a GPS already in the new Qualcomm. I certainly wouldn't call it a need. Nor would I call a fridge, microwave, inverter, TV, etc needs. They all can wait.

Going to the other end of the list, you'll want a set of 4 keyed-alike Master locks available at chain hardware stores. A medium large tackle-box for spare lamps, glad-hand gaskets, some tools, etc. Gloves. Large rubber mallet.
You'll probably want a couple of plastic tote-bins to carry your stuff for when you change trucks or whatever.
The list can get long, but try not to let it.

The first thing you should do is rethink about becoming a truck driver. The pay is not that great for all the hours that you put in, and you get screwed every week if you get paid by the mile. The DOT will always find a way to screw you for some minor problem with your equipment or paperwork. It sounds like you have a good job now, you may want to keep what you have..
