i got most of those tools and supplies, i appreciate the heads up for sure though. as to the others asking why im leaving, it would be hard to explain unless you were a towboater. im a 3rd generation one myself, after 10 years i just feel its time for a change. believe me like trucking, towboating aint going no where. the difference is we dont go by senority we go by licenses, i already have a captains license so the door is always open out here. life is short and you only get one quater to play it so my wife and i wanna give this a shot. Im sure DOT is a pain, try dealing with the department of homeland security, EPA,OSHA etc etc. life on a boat can be just as demanding. we would just like to travel and see the road, give it a shot and see where it takes us.but thanks for all the input, everyone has been very helpful.

It's good to know that you have something to fall back on if trucking don't work out for you.

It is, towboating is just like trucking, my generation aint much on being away or earning a dollar the hard way so it leaves open oppurtunities for the rest of us. We have a big turnover rate out here also. Trucking has been something ive always been interested in, plus with the rider programs most companies offer it would be kinda nice to see the little lady some, my wife has never even got to see what i do because of all the new security laws. We have no kids and love to travel im hoping maybe one day we can be team drivers.

Readytotruck, not trying to deter you or be negative but you posted that you have a decent paying job and are also married. I very highly recommend you rethink this endeavor. Unless you hate your job and want to get away from your wife!:biggrin_2559:

You really aren't going to be making a whole lot out there so maybe its the lifestyle you are going for? Also home time is going to be few and far between. Be fully prepared to be away from your wife for 4-6 weeks at a minimum.

This is the number one reason for new drivers quitting and hope you are fully aware of what it is really going to be like out there. I would take what the recruiters are telling you with a grain of salt. They are salesmen and sure can paint a pretty picture of truck driving.

Just give it a little extra thought...

thanks chompi, i have taken that in consideration several times, i already work 4 weeks away from home. that is my standard time onboard. atleast most trucking companies offer a rider program after training which is something they dont out here. and as far as money well its hard to explain unless you work out here. it looks different from the other side of the wall.

I believe there is a thread somewhere on here about tools to carry, but this is what I carry, and this list varies depending on who you work for, what you haul (van, flatbed, specialized) and what your skill level is:

    binder bar
50' air hose with tire chuck and 4" cut off wheel
    two pry bars
    3lb sledge
    hammer
    2 gal. washer fluid
    1 gal. coolant
    king pin lock
    2 pad locks
    tire guage
    2 spare taillights
4 spare marker lights (two red, two amber)
8 screw drivers (4 flatheads, 4 sloted) of varying sizes
2 multi-tool hex-key set (one standard, one metric)
1 leatherman style multi-tool (in addition to the one on my belt)
3/8 dr. mixed set of sockets and a ratchet
    wire crimper/cutter
    battery terminal cleaner
    2 chain t-handles
    2 LED flashlights (1 large 1 small)
oh and one bad person be good length of 1.5" dia. steel stock

wow striker thanks, so i need my whole tool box lol, didnt realize that much but thank you for the heads up for sure on the tools, not really sure what type im gonna end up on, i wouldnt mind the flat bed i know there is alot of tarping and strapping, but i am the type that dont mind the hard work for sure if it pays off. not to sound like a total newbie, but there are compartments on the side of most rigs for the tools right? how is the industry on twic cards? i already have mine out here not sure if needed, sure you need it for bulk but wasnt sure on flatbed or reefer, what do you think is the best to go for being a newbie, flatbed, reefer, bulk?

Small crowbar was a good buy for me. I thump tires with it and can bang and pry on stuff when that unfortunately becomes necessary. Tire gauge, yes. My company gives those out for free. Leather work gloves for fueling and other hands on dirty work. A roll of those blue shop towels are nice to have as well.
